Best used car for sale under $20k you say?

Oppos,

Currently I have a 2010 VW Golf TDI (2dr, 6spd) with about 85k miles. I’m a littler nervous about the maintenance it will need over the next 40k miles so I’m curious to see what’s out there in the used market for under $19-20k. I have a couple restrictions though...

I’ll need a loan, so it MUST be newer than 2010-2011 with mileage preferably under 40k.

MUST get decent gas mileage - anything in the reliable 20’s in the city should be OK

Practicality - I don’t have a huge need for it, but its nice to have space available should anything come up

Prefer RWD but I’m open to fwd and awd both

It must be fun. Even if its slow, like my TDI, it has to have a good “fun factor”

I’m located around Philly and would travel up to around 300 miles to pick up a car.

Modded TDI up top for your time.

2013 Accord EX-L V6 coupe. It’s fast, it’s got a stick shift, handles decently, and its fuel economy is 21 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

Whelp, that’s settled.

That list included 2010 and newer with under 45k miles, within 300 miles of Philly, $20,000 and less Mustang GT, Fiesta ST and Focus ST.

You should be all set my friend.

Do you keep your car well maintained?

If you do, there is no reason to try to look into a crystal ball and think a VW TDI will not stay reliable. And really, your depreciation hit and the hit you will pay at the pump will be a wash.

I was kind of thinking that... My car is in pretty decent shape. Had the HPFP blow up at 80k, which VW fixed at no charge so it wasn’t a huge deal. Other than that, no issues.

All great suggestions. The Mustang GT is calling me but... I didn’t know that almost new Foc ST’s are under $20k already!

EX-L V6’s look nice. I’ll keep them in mind for sure.

The Fiesta ST with zero options is 21k starting MSRP brand new. so used for either FiST or FoST you should be solid.

If you want RWD, and don’t care about being practical the GT’s are an awesome option. You could get newer with a V6 and still have a blast in it. I mean, the 2011 and up had almost as much HP out of the V6 as the GT got out of the V8 in 2010.

Oh, and 31 on the highway with that 3.7L V6

Doesn’t really fit all of your criteria, but E39 M5’s are awesome.

I would absolutely LOVE an e39 M5. Unfortunately, I don’t think that it would be the smartest buy. At this point in my life, $20k is really the top of my budget and I don’t want to push it with a 15 year old M car :)

Then keep the Golf. As long as you maintain it, the car will be fine.

Unless something goes horribly wrong, keep it. You can basically trade it in whenever, but once you do, there’s no going back.
