Shortly after I brought my S3 home I thought to myself “Oh great, now I’m going to have to register at VWvortex.” Every time I have a question I’m going to have to sift through all of the trolls/assholes in search of a kind soul who can provide some insight.

To my surprise and probably yours too, everyone has been just peachy over at VWvortex. A perfect example of “don’t believe everything you hear”. However the same cannot be said for the thread that I replied to on one of the BMW forums.

I have seen threads from more than a few people that have made the same traded that I did (E90 M3 to S3). One guy sited almost all of the same reasons that I did, it was spooky. I landed on another thread where the person was looking to traded his 335, and cross shopping an E90 M3 and an S3. The post was over a month old, so I hesitated to respond, but I did and said something to the effect of “Hey just traded my E90 for an S3, I would be happy to answer any questions/provide insight on either car.”

I won’t go into detail, but I got a bunch of shithead responses from everyone except the person who started the thread. I thought to myself “Why do I ever post anything about cars outside of Oppo? It rarely goes well elsewhere.”

An Aero 8 for your time.

An S3 isn’t a VW! Wait, or is it? haha

What about AudiWorld or somewhere else? Agree on Vortex, I used to have an account when I owned a Jetta.

It used to be pretty bad, but mainly because of the...ahem...broad socioeconomic mix of VW buyers. There aren’t many brands that transcend class quite as well as VW, and include such a mix of tuners and luxury-oriented people in the same place. Acura, maybe, but not so much anymore.

So you’d go to Vortex with a serious question and get a trove of answers from high-schoolers who just bought a 15-year-old GTI and think they can outrun a Ferrari. And they bring all their little high school crap with them.

But yeah, it’s gotten a lot better, but I’d still go with Audiworld or Audizine for a more focused group. Most of the Vortex stuff trickles over into the other forums pretty readily through cross-posts, common members, etc.

I think it REALLY depends on the forum. The Crossfire forum has been nothing but helpful to me. But thats probably because they’re all old boring guys.*

*not intended to be rude to old boring guys, old boring guys are nice.

I was once told on a “car club” forum that if I buy a brand new car, I might as well pack up and leave because clearly I’m incapable of modding cars if I buy new........let’s ignore that ~50% of their members never have a working vehicle and the ones that do are often hanging on by a thread. So I bought my Fiesta ST, told everyone in my build threads to fuck off for hating, and quit. I still flip them off whenever I see their project cars on the side of the road....again.

Just small minded fanboy things about both cars. BMW guys saying the Audi sucks, and Audi guys saying the BMW sucks. I just like talking cars, so I figured that I might start up a series of productive comments that would help this dude along with his decision. Silly me.

Yea I have found that forums with fewer members/subscribers are generally much more friendly.

That’s a great point the forum is huge. More people in general = more assholes in general. I’ve registered on Audizine, I will check out Audiworld as well.

I find Vortex to be par for the course if you stick to technical stuff/actual issues. Still has the general population that most forums with mass have (knowledgeable guy that’s a prick for no reason...I hate that guy and there’s at least one on every forum/14 year old ‘experts’ who don’t even have basic concepts right/genuinely clueless/genuinely knowledgeable & helpful/etc. etc.).

The place where it blows is when you venture into opinion threads. It’s intolerable. I just mine the forum, which is good enough since it's so massive most everything I'd ask has already been done 5x over.

There’s all kinds out there.

Because I have a Mustang and a Thunderbird, I am on multiple forums. Thunderbirds are, of course, extinct, and the few still on TCCoA are a pretty committed, knowledgeable bunch with a lot of love for the MN12.

Mustangs, on the other hand are far more popular, and while you can find a lot of good advice out there, there are always a lot of new members who never contribute more than a few posts. Once they fix their idle or whatever, they disappear, never to return.

Yep. Use the search feature, tons of great info buried in the chaff there.

I think that typically regular car forums will have more trash-talkers, while luxury car forums will have better people to talk to. I go on ClubLexus and whenever someone switches from a GS/IS to an Audi or BMW, they’re generally congratulated for their purchase.

Direct quote from Club Lexus forums:

“So let me get this straight. The PS fluid started leaking out of your car, and he let you drive off in it and said “yeah sure, come back tomorrow”..........????

That’s just stupid AND DANGEROUS. That’s like letting someone leave with leaky brakes.”

Apparently leaking PS fluid is dangerous.

Surprisingly, I have had a great experience on m5board.com in the E39 section. Most of the guys are really helpful and the sense of community is really good. With the price of E39 M5’s coming down lately I assumed that the forum would be full of inflammatory shit-posters, but it seems like there are plenty of wealthier old guys who really cherish the car for what it is and not what it says about them.

People are so silly. I can see having a preference, but how could either of these cars “suck”? I’ve had good experiences with vortex too, oppo is far more entertaining!
