Things went great! First time I didn’t get scalding oil down my arm when reaching up blindly for the oil filter. Also caught the drain plug (I usually always drop it in the drain pan) before it fell.
We burned and leaked about 2 quarts of oil over 3300 miles, but considerably less leakage on the driveway. Oil was clean, just some remnants of the pan gasket. 222k miles and counting.

Yeah it’s been a dripping guzzler for a few years and replacing the oil pan gasket requires dropping the transmission... so... fuck that. Oil is cheap.

This is the engine bay of my wife’s car. Subaru FB-series motor. Oil filter on top. Seriously, this needs to be way more common of a thing than it is. Sorry for the tiny image - I’m on airplane WiFi right now at 38,000 feet somewhere over Arkansas - suddenly realizing that I’m about 1,000 miles overdue for an oil change in my DD.

Hell yeah. On my pickup you can just reach under the upper radiator hose and unscrew the filter. And it’s high enough off the ground where I can drain the pain without jacking up the car.
