/rant. Have a Buick GSX. Oh, sorry... a “Sabre”.
Maybe I have mental problems or something, but how does something as poorly scrounged together as GTA becomes so sucessful? I don’t get it. Seriously, at this point, I’ve given every single title, save for the two first ones, a chance, and I’ve regretted wasting my Money and/or time almost every single time.
The driving is terrible, the characters, save for a few shining exceptions (Motherfucking Tenpenny) are pointless, the oh so beloved sidemissions are sleep inducing, the minigames are idiotic (Why would anyone repeat the Yoga sequence forchrissake?) and the stories are pretty much the same shit over and over again, with only the pop culture references and the trying too hard to be funny jokes changing up a bit.
I’ve heard that nobody plays GTA for that stuff, and that the game is actually the ultimate mayhem simulator, but even that lasts about 5 minutes before getting old. This is my third or fourth attempt at playing the “modern” GTAs, and I’m still sleeping through Vice City Stories. And that’s the very first one in chronological order.
I simply don’t get GTA.

Its just fun to go on and fuck around. I’ve played over 30 days of online alone with my close friends. The customization is fun and you can do stupid things you never could in real life. Its a fun time waster to me

To be honest, I never even tried the online mode, so there’s that.... still, I’ve read about the earlier games, those without mp modes, being hailed as the greatest games ever, and I just don’t get where all the praise comes from

I use to be in your shoes, then I played the Saints Row series till GTA V came out; since the I’ve put way too many hours into standing on top of a train humping the air. Its a fun game to act like an immature idiot in

On a related note, have you ever played Red Dead Redemption? It’s made by the same people who make GTA but it’s miles better in terms of plot: no forced pop-culture references, no cartoonishly over-the-top characters, most of the side missions are extremely well-scripted and interesting, and above all else the main story is one of the best narratives of any video game ever (second only to The Last of Us imo), and I don’t say that lightly. It’s a more mature, nuanced, and introspective game than GTA and I highly recommend giving it a chance.

Echoing online with friends. That pretty much makes any mediocre game heaps better. Side note related to oppo & video games, does anyone play dirt rally? Online multiplayer for rallycross is available now. I wanted to post about it but I don’t have posting permissions :(

Meh, not everyone is going to like the same things. I can’t get into first-person war shooters or any sports games despite those being hugely popular.
I’ll be honest, I love the game mostly for the “do whatever you want” huge open world. But While I do cause my share of mayhem I also do things like try and drive a bus to the top of the mountain, or tour the whole map in a station wagon with luggage on the roof taking selfies at all the roadside attractions. Or try and land planes on top of buildings.

I haven’t, but I did play LA Noire, which was published by Rockstar, and enjoyed it quite a lot, though it did play down the open world aspect in order to focus on the story and characters.

Agreed on that point... I don’t often play shooters, and the only sports games I have are racers.
I guess GTA does have that aspect of doing whatever you want, but, honestly, I never found that much of whatever to do, partly because, while the games have pretty big, varied maps, the environments seem disproportionately small. There’s not a lot of room to mess around in San Andreas’ Los Santos, for example, as the entire city would fit within a neighborhood of the New York in Driver Parallel Lines, which was released only one year later. You have major avenues with one or two lanes only, and a couple blocks long that don’t lend well for seeing how fast you can go on that sports car you just stole, for example.

RDR is kind of like a mix of LA Noire and GTA: the story is a lot more focused and linear than any GTA game (not to mention so much better written) but the open-world environment makes it fun to do all kinds of other things (really well-done side missions, treasure hunts, challenges, etc.). You could probably find RDR for really cheap since it came out like 5 years ago, definitely give it a shot if you liked LA Noire.
