Star Trek: The Next Generation is now in HD and 5.1 on Netflix.

Heavy breathing ensues.

I guess it’s time to watch the series for the umpteenth time.

Started to re-watch a couple of weeks ago. On Season 2. Really enjoying it.

In Hatland no HD, and sadly it looks like your gif on the FP of Oppo (buggered).

It was originally filmed on 35mm but all the effects(phasers and the likes) were done after it was converted to video and they had to be redone for the restoration.

Looks like this just happened a few days ago . I was just watching a random episode and thought to myself this looked really good.

Buggered gif is kind of ironic.

F*ck... I went through TOS, then TNG (which looked like some kinda damn VHS rips), and am now trudging through Voyager. HD and 5.1?!? Agh!

I'm not sure how I failed to realize that it was shot on film. If it had been shot using something else, they never could have done this. I'm excited.

Sweet. I’ll have to start watching again. I have like 5-6 series I’m in the middle of watching right now, and sometimes I won't watch one for two months, then binge watch 10 episodes in a day or something.

Slightly off-topic in that I don’t think there’s a way to do this with Netflix...

Okay, this is going to sound like sacrilege - but sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes I use the zoom function to make the HD episodes full-screen, cropping out the top and bottom of the frame.

I know, I know - that’s not how they were meant to be seen. And in most cases it only takes a couple minutes for there to be a couple framing issues that get annoying and I give up on it.

BUT just after Leonard Nimoy died I watched the two-parter with Spock. For whatever reason, there were maybe only 2-3 scenes per episode where I switched back to 4:3 because people were being cut off. (Sidenote: Stephen Root plays a Klingon in those ones!)

Please note: This is not something I would normally advocate, but the novelty of seeing TNG widescreen is fun in small doses.

I don’t know enough about film, but I wonder if a widescreen version exists somewhere since it was originally filmed on 35mm?

Overly convoluted explanation: 35mm film is actually closer to 4:3 in aspect ratio but is usually cropped to 16:9, etc for cinema. When they shot Trek, they framed it for 4:3 regardless of what they could or couldn’t do with the film because they never imagined preparing it for 16:9. So no, widescreen doesn’t exist... except for intentionally cropping it.

Interestingly enough, there were a few shots filmed in “widescreen” for the purposes of later adding special effects. There’s an interesting articel about it here:

I’ve done this before too. VLC has a nice 16:9 crop setting. It is unfortunate that a 16:9 frame couldn’t be taken from the film without showing stage equipment like mics, cameras, etc.

Been watching some more since you posted this. The HD conversion is weird. It's like it doesn't start out at HD, but after about 10-15 seconds it converts. Then it goes to SD for the opening credits. And then once the show starts after the opening credits it switches back to HD. I'd love to know exactly what Netflix is doing here. Are they just upconverting on their end prior to the stream?

I think some of that comes down to internet speed. Mine takes a good 2-3 minutes to get to 720(my max) while where my brother lives he gets 1080 within a few seconds. I didn’t notice that about the credits though. Weird.
