A gentleman to the end...Goodbye Justin. You were the easiest person to spot in the Paddock with your giant frame and one of the nicest.

I hope this converts at least one person who was on the fence about donating organs to checking the box on their DMV applications.

Yeah, it makes no sense not to check the box. What good are my organs to me if I am dead?

Probably something to do with fundamental Christians or some other religions.

I honestly don't understand why more people don't donate their organs. If I'm dead, I certainly won't be using them anymore. This is the same reason I plan on donating my body to science after the organs are harvested. If I can help at least one person it seems rather selfish not to do it.

I ride a motorcycle. People joke we’re organ donors. I’m fully prepared to donate my organs if I’m mortally wounded...

That box was checked the day I got my license

The fear is “what if someone more important than me currently needs an organ and I’m in critical care...”

Nah, some folks have legitimate issues with the criteria for brain death, persistent vegetative state, cardiac death after removal from a respirator, etc. and how they were established (ie that the criteria were established, not in a vacuum, but with the desire to increase the organ pool as an input). It’s the same line of reasoning that some people use to oppose the death penalty if their opposition hinges on ‘not executing the innocent’ (humans are fallible, consequence is permanent, potential for corruption, etc.). Doesn’t move the needle for me, I'm a donor, but I can see how people would have legitimate concerns checking the box.

I am pretty sure hospitals are not that corrupt

My reply to this is: If somebody is willing to kill you to give your organs to a more important person, a checkbox won’t stop them from doing so

Also a motorcycle rider, also an organ donor.

Actually today on the drive home I was thinking of putting an “organ donor” sticker on my helmet.

Uhm, have you checked out how for profit organizations behave in the face of pressure? Maybe not. You also might be young. I used to be young, too.

Yeah, it is kinda silly how hospitals are for profit and such. I might be naïve to think that hospitals wouldn’t be that corrupt but it also seems like tin-foil hat conspiracy level stuff to think that they are going to harvest my organs. And in that regard, I could see them doing that then regardless of whether I authorize it as an organ donor.

Organ harvesting, no, I wouldn’t assume that. Procedures you don’t actually need, yeah. I remember when we were going to have a baby and were looking at C-section stats in various hospitals. The private ones all had 20%+ while the self-insured Kaiser system had a 12% rate.

C-Sections cost a lot more than regular births. Kind of a natural law thing going on there.
