For those of you not in school and feeling left out (and old), post a picture of what car or vehicle you had when you graduated. Here is a picture of a 2004 Ford Taurus in the same color that I had.

I didn’t have a car in high school. When I graduated college I had a hand me down 2004 Accord like this
Gave it back to my parents and bought a Kia Forte Koup 2 months later. I liked the Kia, but in hindsight I should have kept the accord. It was perfectly good at being a car, and I wasn't paying for it. Could have saved up and had a proper sports car along with the Honda by now...oh well

I have no pictures of my actual first car, but it was one of these:
1982 Pontiac 6000LE. Dark blue, with hubcaps that fell off left and right instead of wire wheels, and that awesome Iron Duke 4-banger under the hood took it from 0-60 in 7.5 million years. I got it for my high school graduation with just 25k original miles put on by my grandmother since new. I proceeded to replace pretty much every part that was no longer lubricated by the old grease and wore out very quickly once I started driving it again. I wasn’t a car nut then, so I paid a lot of money I didn’t have to get a shop to do it. But it was the first car I ever did my own wrenching on, with the help of a friend who knew how, as I wrote about here .
I still drove it briefly after college, until traffic stopped suddenly and I rear ended a Celica. I soon traded it in on an almost new ‘95 Mercury Tracer.
Don’t worry, my taste in cars improved after that. My next one was an E21 BMW 320i.

I wasn’t completely car-less, my mom let me borrow her G35 anytime I wanted to go somewhere. I lived a mile from school, so I usually just rode my bike. For a lot of senior year my mom would drop me off on her way to work and I’d walk home.
I didn't have a car of my own until Junior year of college. The Accord had been my brothers when he was in college and he moved to NYC so my parents took it back and let me use it.

I enjoyed many times burning the “JDM cool kids” in high school, even ran a couple bmw 3 series’s in it. Beat up my sister’s Mustang in races, that was funny, but she only had a 4 cylinder (yay 80s notchback!). The giant bowtie was apparently a “please try and race me sticker”
And they are definitely survival level, I just always got 20 oz sodas when I drove the blue one, cap it, plopped it on the passenger seat.
it technically had 2 cupholders, if you opened the glove compartment, there were 2 half inch round impressions that were supposed to be cupholders. if you were parked. Otherwise, woulda been screwed haha.

I still have it today, the rear window leaks and quarter panels rotted out so it’s been under reconstruction lately and looks like this:
Unfortunately none of my high school pictures are digital... I’ll see if I can find the ones from the night the odometer rolled from 99999 to 00000. We drove around and then stopped and took a lot of pictures for the occasion!

Back in high school, I rocked a 1976 Triumph 2500TC as a hand-me-down from my parents. It was a wonderful old car, full of character, and, with a lovely straight-six, a manual transmission, and rear wheel drive, actually quite entertaining to drive hard (which I most certainly did). It stayed in the family just long enough to use as my wedding car a couple of years ago, but died of terminal rust not long afterward :(.
The whole undergraduate thing took me far longer than it should have (eight years, three majors, and two universities in two different countries), but I’m finally done as of this summer, and terrorising the streets with a Volvo 855R, a VW Scirocco, and a rather scruffy MGA roadster.

I had a lot of maintenance on that one. It was a really nice truck, but the gas mileage combined with about $100 in maintenance a month (fluctuating from 50 to 150, I averaged) for the last 5-6 months I had it, I said screw this I’m getting something that has less problems so I can just budget for the car payment.
I ended up on the winning end of that deal because of the drastically better gas mileage and practically zero maintenance cost on the Milan. Only wearables, tires, brakes and oil/filters in 50k miles on the Milan.
I miss the power and capability of the Blazer. But when I do I just take the Jeep Commander out with it’s lift kit and bigger tires and I’m all set.
I’m planning in another 2-2.5 years to buy a Canyon or Colorado. Though if Ford follows through with the US Ranger....(potentially being built down the road in my old town)
JR1
> MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
08/26/2015 at 15:59 | 0 |
Really? It was that unreliable? What kind of engine did it have? But I feel you on gas mileage. For something so small I wish the gas wasn’t so bad.
And my dad has a 3.0 V6 Taurus and that has zero running cost as well.
A little Canyon or Colorado would be nice but I think if I get another truck I want something with a wider bed so an F150.

Yeah I want truck but don’t want big, I don’t need 10k pound towing lol. the Colorado V6 4x4 almost matches my Milan FWD V6 (also Ford 3.0) in MPG and SOOO much more capable.
It was little stuff, the 4.3L Vortec. Like, whelp there goes another O2 sensor ($90 or so), there’s the check engine light again....etc. I had to get the heater core flushed every year if I wanted heat. Which, giving Michigan. Yes, Yes I would like heat.
Also we were about to start trying for our first kid, and it only had the front 2 airbags. MOAR SAFETY BALOOOOONS. It also didn’t have LATCH system for easy car seat hookups. (Milan has them all over the place, I’m surprised one doesn’t pop up under your ass)
Did we really need 2 4x4’s? Probably not, but we will again when I get a Colorado in a few years.
