My mom is wanting to get a convertible. She test drove the new 435i convertible the other day and really like it but the $60,000 was a bit above what she wanted to spend. She’s wanting to stay in the 40-50k USD for her next car that has to be a convertible. I’ve been trying to talk her into a certified Boxter but she says that it’s too small and feels unsafe despite my talk of crumple zones and other safety features that make it safer than her gx460. So do yall have any suggestions or anything to prove to her that a Boxter is safe?

Why not go with the 2 series convertible?

As the owner of a 2 Series Coupe, I can say the convertible just doesn't look right with the top up.

What about a Lexus IS C or Infiniti G60? Offlease ones should come in well under burdget and nicely equipped.

If she wants a German convertible the Audi A3 cabrio starts at like $37k.

That’s a great budget, i have just the car.
E93 335is or M3. The E93 chassis is a great choice because the hardtop allows it to be driven year round and it’s safe. It’s also very fun to drive and pretty good looking (although I admit I do prefer the coupe). The selling point to me is the fact that the back seats are actually usable.. As in 4 normal sized adults fit in the car. You can get CPO examples with a warranty within budget.
Also, I know you are thinking these will both be unreliable. Nah, the S65 V8 is one of the more reliable modern BMW engines, M or not. Pretty impressive for a screaming V8. Fuel economy is not great though haha. The 335is is special in my book because if your mom doesn’t want manual, the other choice is a really good DCT transmission, just like the one in the M3. I know you’ve probably heard the 335i horror stories, they don’t exactly reflect on the 335is. The 335is used the N54 engine (more tunable, sounds amazing on the 335is) while the 335i of the same years used the N55 engine, which was supposed to fix all the N54 problems from earlier 335i’s. The N54 in the 335is recieved all the upgraded parts that address the reliability concerns stemming from the older 335i’s.

G37, has AWD available if that’s important.
Volvo C70: A bit older and cheaper, but supremely comfortable, roomy, and safe.
Jaguar XK.
911 Cabrio in that same price range.
2015 Mustang GT Premium.
Aston Martin DB9 (probably won’t be at CarMax).
Way outside of CarMax: a Maserati, but I wouldn’t want one in that price range without one hell of a warranty. Ditto the Ferrari 360 and 430 Spiders (if they’ve gotten that cheap?) Spitballing there, but if she knows what’s available it can narrow her focus more rapidly than having limited choices.

She might be able to snag a CPO 428 Vert from BMW in that price range.
