As some of you know, I am a substitute teacher. I can’t teach during the summer, of course, so I work at the local Canadian favorite coffee shop. A “tuned” ‘98 or so dark green Civic sedan with questionable lowering comes through drive through while I am out back emptying the compost and stops at the speaker. I glance at it and the late-teenage driver and notice the lowering, aftermarket rims and gold anodized aftermarket wheel lug nuts.....however, something doesn’t look right. The rear-left wheel only has three gold lug nuts on it.

“OK”, I think, “maybe he lost one so there is a normal lug nut on there.” I look closer.........no lug nut at all!?!?

“Hey man, you’re missing a lug nut on your rear-left.” I say as he probably didn’t know, trying to do my good (and safe!) deed of the day! Very dangerous with only three lug nuts holding the wheel on!

Response: “Yeah, I’m missing the whole stud!” Says the kid proudly with a dumb grin on his face.

Then he drives away......

Talk about taking your life end the lives of others in your hands! What the hell! The extra strain on those three remaining studs? The probable wobble and massively off tire wear...?

I just can’t fathom the stupidity....I wonder if it had even been safety inspected, and, if so, how in God’s name it passed.....

O_o (Sorry, no pics as I was at work!)

/rant off

I’ll give him a bit of leeway here. On most vehicles you can drive “safely” minus one lug/lugnut. And since he knew he was missing one, and was rather coy about it, he may already have plans to fix it.

Or he may be an idiot, we’ll never know.

I’ve driven back on 3 out of 4 studs before in an ‘01 Miata. Sheared one off at an autocross and the house was about 2.5 hours away. Darn thing didn’t care it was missing a lug and nut at 70 mph through the night.

You can do this for a little while but it's best not to. Only hard cornering would really stress it too badly.

The weight of the car isn’t being supported by the studs. It’s the friction between the wheel and the hub that carry the weight. The studs and lug nuts create this friction. It’s still stupid and is something that needs to be fixed.

It was on the FP a while back. There’s just so many things wrong with that picture.

I got a flat tire on 81 in Virginia on my way home to North Carolina from Pennsylvania. Due to rust, I ended up breaking three studs off of the wheel I had to change. This was in 1997, before everyone had a cell phone.

Luckily the two remaining ones were mostly opposite each other.

I made it home safe.

I guess I was lucky.

Maybe not as unsafe as I thought, but I would never think of doing it on my own car unless I absolutely HAD to...

Well I’ve been told that 4/5 is no big deal but 3/4 isn’t too advisable. Plus my stud was snapped and not missing so it still was catching in the port on the wheel.
