Occasionally I’ll have an idea for a car that will stick in my mind for a given period of time until I realize that putting a Shelby GT500 power train in an eleventh generation Ford Thunderbird is a terrible idea.

In the case of this idea however, I can’t seem to shake the thought that building, owning, and driving such a thing would be anything less than awesome.

So let’s start with a Series II Jaguar XJ, like this one:

Kinja'd!!!

So take this, and add some very dark British racing green paint, some lightly flared wheel arches, bigger and wider wheels and tires. None of these visual enhancements should be done in a distasteful way, just subtle tweaks to make the appearance a little more striking and modern to go along with what’s going under the hood.

A 5.0 liter Coyote crate engine. Nothing crazy. 400 something horsepower, and a decent transmission and differential to get it to the ground.

Given the fact that I’m building this car using my fictional rich selves’ money, I’ll make the interior pretty nice too. Nice tan leather, and make the seats ventilated dammit. GPS is useless in a world where I’ll realistically just use my phone for directions, but Bluetooth is a must. Also, the only way I would settle for the car as an automatic is if the J-gate would work with any transmission that would also work with the motor. If that’s not possible then 3 pedals is more than welcome.

As my rich self would use this car as one of my daily drivers, I would want it to be loud when I want it to be, but not offensive when I don’t. Butterfly valves in the exhaust is a nice solution. Who wouldn’t want a loud button in their car?

I can’t not think this would be absolutely awesome to own. I would park it proudly in my garage with my other fictional cars including my first Gen Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder with a 6 speed and the VF engineering supercharger. Alcantara steering wheel, diamond stitched leather, and if it’s not yellow I’m not buying.

What cars are in your fictitious garage?

Hotrodding old european cars should be more common. I know it’s sacrilege and very expensive, but those who do it right, a la Magnus Walker, seem to make a big impression on the scene. I’ll take a chopped and shaved 280 SEL on air suspension, with a C63 (n/a) swap.

I’ve always wanted to turn a 3rd Gen caprice into a drift car, just for the reaction I would get.

An SII XJ coupe with the supercharged AJ16 out of an X300 XJR - with the supercharger swapped out for a more modern twin-screw for extra top end. Sorry, but V8s are just wrong in XJs, there are more appropriate ways to do it. (Although since someone suggested it on Oppo recently, I oscillate between the XJR I6 mill and an Aston V12 engine). Stock interior apart from modern aircon. blue-grey over blue.

A Mk2 with a complete F Type R drivetrain. For some reason the no-V8s rule doesn’t apply to Mk2s: don’t ask me why, it’s not rational. Cream over red.

A Citroen Traction Avant with a turbo’d Maserati/SM V6 & hydroelastic suspension. Black over red.

A Fiat X1/9 with an Alfa V6. Lime green because 70s wedgetastic.

An ur-Mini with Honda VTEC. BRG with cream roof & enough spots to blind people 3 counties over

A Rover SD1 3500 with the engine given the full TVR treatment. Bronze metallic over brown velour because sleeper.

Those are my fictional garage restomods - everything else is stock or full race spec!

There’s 2 local jags with a 350 swap, one brg, the other black. Strongly considering as a second DD along with the e24 for the gf and myself.

I like your vision and I think you’re on the right track, but I’d keep the engine all Jag. if you’ll allow me to pitch my dream XJ:

It has to be a 1972 XJ12 because that’s the only year they combined the gorgeous swb body with the 5.3L V12. I’d lower it, put some wide borrani wire wheels on it, munt 6 webers atop the V12 and run big fat exhaust pipes out just before the rear wheels.

The 3 spd auto would be replaced by a 5 speed manual of some sort and the suspension would be stiffened. Oh yeah, that’s the stuff.

I'd just want something turnkey reliable, which a Jag V12 certainly is not.

You could consider a modern Aston V12. it’s still a british engine with the correct amount of cylinders!

The 5.0 would piss off the purists. I like that.
