Turns out that something in the latest android update for the Galaxy S5 causes it to brick SD cards.

So not only am I running out of space because there’s 6GB of phantom data that I cannot see or remove on a 16GB phone, but I have no way of getting more storage.

My wife’s S5 went through two updates that severely crippled the phone, made it run hot, and subsequently made it lose charge even while plugged in. So she replaced it with a - wait for it - Note4. *facepalm*.

Good luck with yours.

If you consider replacing it, might I recommend a Lumia? Wait until after October if you can.

That was actually my plan, and I even went back to my old Lumia for a while because I was fed up with the GS5, but with Android Auto in my car now... it’s sort of the only thing keeping me with android for now, but it’s a big one.

But yeah, staying the hell away from Samsung. The last two android phones I had, A Droid Charge and a GS3 were wonderful, but this one has just gone to shit lately.

My wife loved/loves her GS3, though has conveniently forgotten the reason she got the S5 was due to similar problems with the S3. She had an HTC Sensation before then which was OK for a while until she broke the glass, and Blackberries before then. If BB offered something more compelling through T-Mobile she would have considered that, but she’s happy with the Note.

I’m anxiously awaiting the fall lineup of Lumias. They're supposed to me quite formidable, and there are rumors of a Surface phone in the spring.

A surface phone? That sounds... interesting. Is that just a branding exercise or is it going to run full-fat windows?

Sounds like you’re having fun tonight.

Honestly, this is the first samsung phone that’s given me problems on this scale. My old Droid Charge and GS3 were excellent phones. I’d be going back to Nokia if it weren’t for the compelling draw of Android Auto.

Excepting the Nexus series, don’t all [google] android-based phones do this? IIRC the Moto X and G (and their derivatives) have a minimal launcher. And of course there's non-google android devices.

Windows 10 Mobile will have a mode called Continuum which essentially allows the phone to act as a pocket computer, and broadcast to a monitor, TV, or laptop/tablet and use peripherals like mice and keyboards. It will still need fleshing out, of course, but with Universal apps anything written for computer Windows 10 can work on 10 Mobile, plus Android apps can be sideloaded (and there might be an easier way than that soon, and ios/mac apps can easily be converted to Windows) now on the Preview.

I’m so ready for October’s event launching new phones and the final release of the software.

As far as hardware is concerned, these are what the rumored specs are.

It sucks that you’re having problems with your S5; my S6 hasn’t run into any serious issues since the Stagefright patch.

The Z3, Z3+, and Z3 Compact do have an OEM launcher on top of google android, plus apps and bloatware.

The phone itself is rumored to share the Surface design language, with the silver metal body, with top-tier specs, and powered by Intel chips.

My GS5 “ate” my old SD card a while back but that SD card was also 4 years old so it may well have just failed.

Same thing happened with my s5. If you format the card, that should “fix” the issue (aside from you will lose the data on the card). I also had to clear my cached data to free up space on the internal storage.

Neither the phone nor my computer can format the card. The phone just fails and the computer doesn’t even see the card. This is a brand new card, too.

Did you put the card in a seperate reader? Or was it in your phone plugged in to the computer. I had to pull my card out of the phone, and plug it in with a usb before the computer would recognize it.

Put it into the SD card slot with one of those full size adapters. Tried it with a known good card and it saw that, so I know it isn’t the slot on the computer.
