(To the tune of Lego’s “Everything is Awesome”)
EVERYTHING IS PITTED! EVERYTHING IS PITTED WHEN YOU’RE COMPLETELY BROKE!
EVERYTHING IS PITTED! POLISHING IS GIIIIIVING US A STROKE.

That thing looks so good As-Is. Why mess with it?

That looks badass. Why change it?

Because it’s what people in the business would call a ‘10 footer’ ( or as Quint would say...“Twenty fiiiive”). The pitting on almost every chrome piece is baaaad and needs to be replaced. So nothing changed, just, less metallic chicken pox-like. These were pictures I had to take for the insurance company.
Plus it’s only in primer. It, umm, needs some paint. XD

Mmmmm, but it will be so much more. We have a 4-speed close ratio T-10 to put in, plus the side scoops, and dark green paint.

Not changing it except for side scoops and dark green paint. I was referring more to fact that the existing chrome is in teerrrible shape (though it doesn’t show with my cheap point-and-shoot camera).

Dark green will look sweet! I knew you were talking about the chrome, I was just providing irrelevant commentary sbout your car. Does it have the 289, the 302, or did you do an engine swap?

Interesting story there.
It is a 289, but the convertible top is actually a swap. The 1965 289 coupe was chopped and the 1966 I6 convertible (that had a frame that had ceased to exist) donated its top, gauge cluster, and other trim knick knacks to the cause. So we have two titles: one for a ‘65 V8 coupe and another for a ‘66 I6 convertible, neither of them true to the current car.
Every bit of sheet metal has been replaced except for the trunk lid and cowl (door shells, quarters, fenders, aprons, trunk floor/drop offs...all new), and the frame has been reinforced...creatively. After I clean it up underneath, I’ll do a post on it. The short of it is my dad went a bit weld crazy in the mid to late 90’s and reinforced the frame to the point where it is basically more of a body-on-frame than unibody now. 2 sets of 3/8 inch steel sammiched around the original rails, surpassing any subframe connectors I’ve ever seen. It. Is. A tank. That’s why the car looks kinda lowered even though it’s not: it has close to 300-400 lbs of extra steel.

Needs a roll hoop, a Coyote, some 315’s out back and call it done.

I have studied the Shelby implementation of a roll hoop in the GT500 convertibles. They are not difficult to make, but also provide next to nothing in terms of safety. I’d have to go about revisions to complement the enhanced frame and provide a little more lateral support to the hoop. But doable.
A Coyote would be tons of fun and provide opportunities for road trips and such, but that’s 7K+ for the engine, another 2ish grand for the other components (computer, accessories, mounting and modding of shock towers, exhaust), another 4ish grand for a transmission and shifting hardware, another grand in machining for the drive shaft and tunnel modifications, another grand and a half to upgrade to the 9 inch rear with a limited slip or locker of some sort, then another grand to upgrade the brakes. Rounding up, that’s 17 thousand dollars. And that’s if everything went according to plan; when does that happen @_@
And as for 315s... O_O DAT IS MEATY. I’m already on 8”s in the back and 7”s up front. I’d have to sacrifice the trunk drop offs (the perfect place to stash coolers that fit a six pack each) for tubs!

^ This is the eventual goal. Something similar to this car. With a hoop.
Edit: THIS WAS NOT MEANT TO BE SNOOTY! I would love love love to do those modifications (roll hoops are fun and safer [our 90’s Cutlass Supreme had one and it greatly enhanced the redneck-but-not-redneck-because-we’re-in-the-suburbs fun]; the Coyote is my FAVORITE ENGINE of modern times, by far; wider rear tires is the far and away the best modification you can do to any generation of Mustang to improve handling [grip] and acceleration [better utilization of solid rear end advantages])

Hey, we’re on the same page here man. Do what you can, and save for the future. You’ve got a great car, and an excellent platform to build on, do it justice!
