I just went outside and did three things to my Honda: took off the rattling exhaust heat shield, tightened up a loose clutch slave cylinder mounting bolt, and put the rubber boot for the clutch slave back in place (keeps detrius out from the clutch). Now my car makes weird noises. With the clutch out there is a whirring at higher RPMs, and with the clutch in there is a persistant whirring. It sounds like a combination of a fake turbo whistle and the Jetsons car. Annoying as hell. Any thoughts?

Car’s broken, time for a new one.

Not sure about the noise, but make sure and replace the heat shield. You’ll toast the carpeting.

This is the engine bay heat shield. For 90% of its life this car had aftermarket exhaust with no heatshields what-so-ever and did alright, so I should be fine doing so with the stock exhaust. My shift knob does get a bit warm after a while after an autocross cone removed my rear-ward heat shield.

Isn’t that supposed to go away when you release the clutch? This happens with the clutched engaged as well as when it’s disengaged, and when it’s engaged in neutral. Only thing that changes is the RPMs that it happens at.

I'm pretty sure it can make noise engaged too but I could be wrong.

The annoying thing is there is absolutely no reason for this to just now happen like this. Fix one noise on my car, and a worse one pops up. Fantastic.

Cars are assholes like that. I have a phantom high pitched noise at 70mph and I can't for the life of me track it down.

Yes, the bearing is in contact with the pressure plate at all times. Under pressure when it pushes against the pressure plate fingers and can make a whirling / rattling noise. Happened to my S10. Fun times :D

Is the clutch slipping now?

Nope. I backed out one of the bolts holding the slave cylinder to the transmission and that fixed it. I am so confused.

$5 its the throwout bearing starting to go - I’ve had two go, a 1970 VW and a 1990 Nissan Hardbody - they sound weird, high pitched screechy.

I haven’t really thought this through, but I wondered if maybe moving the slave cylinder slightly was altering the hydraulic pressure somehow, causing the clutch to be misadjusted and so not lock up properly.

That’s my best guess. I think the fork might be slightly bent. Either way, it works so I’m not going to worry about it.
