I suppose now that Tesla exists the official Oppo train doesn't need to be a combustion engine.

I’d prefer this one ^
But if we’re going to be serious for a moment... we’d really need something like this:
Because we’d need something that is sporty, stylish, older, and a bit exotic. Bonus points for being made on the other side of the Atlantic too.

Gonna have to suggest the 611 train, because local-ish, the sound, and “dat livery”

You want Exotic?
How about the S1?

Yes but 611 is an Icon that’s alive, the GG1 is gone.

Overstyled, complex Loewy design that reached for the stars but in some respects was a boondoggle, pretty much defining Cool But Impractical for the train world? Now of interest mainly to topic nerds? Sounds good.

You can have a steam locomotive, and zero emissions, everybody wins! I can’t remember why this happened exactly, I think it was related to a shortage of coal but an abundance of hydropower during WWII.

Gonna have to suggest the Baldwin DR12-8-3000 aka Centipede. Why?
- Diesel? Check, with a pair of straight eight turbocharged 1500hp each beasts
- Long roof? Check, boy howdy. Each unit was eighty feet long (two back to back in photo)
- Manual transmission? N/A - diesel electric
- Brown? Well how about Brunswick Green? Sorta close...
- Exotic? Very. Only three railroads had ‘em.

The Deltic is the RX7 of Locomotives
The RX7 is made by Mazda
Mazda also make the MX5
But choosing The RX7 over the MX5 is the Hipster thing to do
Hipster = Indie
Oppo is independent of Jalopnik
Therefore Oppo is indie which is Hipster which is the RX7 which is the Deltic
I rest my case.

not a lot of power, but small, light, and nimble. it's kind of the Miata of the train world if you ask me!

Unlike some gifs, this one correctly shows that the pistons in each cylinder are slightly out of phase.

Union Pacific GTEL or GTFO because gas turbine-electric locomotive with 8,500 hp and 212,312 lbf of tractive effort (the Big Boy has about 135,375 lbf for reference).
Where have all the lightweights gone?

I second the 611. It’s the locomotive equivalent of the Ford GT. Great looks, great noise, fast, and it is 100% ‘Murican.

Pullman Green according to the SAL’s own paint diagrams...but it weathered fairly quickly to a greenish brown in the South...

GG1 is probably the best fit. My dad was fortunate enough to ride on one of these. Said it pulled like no other train he ever rode on.
But my vote goes to the M-1
