So in my effort to do things just outside my skill set, and after reading a whole bunch of stories about road trips and what not I had an idea I touched on a bit ago but have since refined.
2016 Opposite Lock Meet up!
I would like to organize(or get a group of mods to help me organize) the first annual Oppo-meet-lock-nic.
Sometime in the summer of 2016.
Why so far away? Because if I have learned anything in my time here on oppo/jalop. It’s that we are all either
A. Cheap.
B. Busy
C. Both
So I have tried to think of places that would be good for oppos to get to.
So I am leaning toward Chicago-land area. Why? Because I know a guy who knows THE GUY over at Autobahn country club in Joliet. So maybe able to get us some track time. Also uh I just really like the food in Chicago. Also TONS of free parking in the area, cheap hotels.
How many Oppos would be interested in this trip? I would like to set up t-shirts, goody bags, sight seeing, do some interviews on the podcast, probably live blog and periscope as much as I can for those who couldn’t attend. Thoughts?
Not interested in Chicago-land? Let me know where should go, and why.
This is one of the best online communities in my humble opinion, so why not have a meet up!
Ike is co-host of the Untitled Car Show ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) he has owned 2 Dodge Challengers; a Volvo C30, a V70XC, a V70R, 740; and a Saturn Ion . He is a new father and loves driving and autocrossing. He can jerry rig with the best of them, and he wrote his bio in third person. He also has 2 dogs, 2 cats and is a crazy person some say!

Can’t make any promises but I would definitely consider it. The only issue is that my wife and I are looking to buy our first house later this year or beginning of next AND my sister just moved to Germany for 2 years so we are going to try to go visit her next year. So that may severely limit my fun budget next year.

Maaaaaaaybe. I attended the 2001 Saturn Performance Club Rally out that way, and it was a good fairly central location. Read through the write-up I linked and you’ll see all the things we did and places we went. If Autobahn doesn’t work out there are quite a few tracks up in MI we could check out. We spent a couple of days at Gingerman.

Every other summer month. They split it with a location in the northern suburbs. The last one of the season is...next weekend!

Sounds good to me. Life has a way fing up my summer weekends but I’d be game if it was close enough and chicago is close enough. Maybe we could have a oppo road rally?

So would it be a weekend deal, or what? It’s workable as a weekend road trip from Detroit, but I can’t take much time off during the summer, and I’m hoping to be down at MINIs on the Dragon next May during the week, sooo...Weekends only for me.
But I’m sure there are enough people from the Detroit area that we could convoy down...

The main events would be on the weekend, and I would try and do some events like Thursday Friday and Monday Tuesday for folks who couldn't do the weekend, or who had more time, but we shall see how everything goes

Oh I know, but I’m just saying, my working capital could literally be zero dollars. I just don’t want to be one of those people who’s all like “Yeah man, lets do it!” and then when it comes time to do it be like “Oh man, I can’t do it. I’m broke”

Oh I get that. It's far enough off everyone's situation could change! So when its get about closer too then we shall start locking stuff in, I hope everyone can go, and if not, I shall be live broadcasting one way or another

We do have the annual Hawk’s Nest meet as well (3rd year this year!). Chicago (with my current job) might be a stretch for me. Unsure. It’s like a 10-14 hour drive one way from where I am. Not out of the question, but difficult.
It would be great to start annual meets in other locations, I know there are meetups in the KC area, up by Maine with 505, down in Virginia, and even out in Cali, but they’re just kind of lets get together rather than a big meet. Hawk’s Nest is more of a grill/get-together than a driving event, but going to a track is not out of the question here in Jersey either, we have Englishtown and NJMP.
The live blog/stream is a great idea though. TROG did it a couple years ago and it was incredible how much response and media attention they got from it. I talked to Mel from the Oilers about that a little, but putting together a meet that large scale is a huge task, they handle it incredibly well. I’ll shoot you an email about something else though, that I think you could get on board with, you’ll like it.
