"conrader" (conrader)

An acquaintance of mine is selling someones ‘87 Bronco on FB for $1500. 147k miles. Runs and drives. 302 with 4x4
Message I got from him:
I know it has an engine knock...not sure what it is. 4x4 works and transfer case was rebuilt about 2 years ago. My buddy bought from one of his friends that needed some $ so he used it as a daily driver, around town mainly, for about a year and a half.
Is this a good buy or should I run screaming? I...have a want for the Bronco but I’d prefer it not need an engine rebuild unless it’d be something that was worth the time and money to do it. Or what should I be looking for? I know very little about the work these things would need possibly.

I know getting hit by any vehicle isn't good but these vertical bars would give you a splitting headache.

I mean, I'll try to avoid that if I buy it.

Maybe $1,000. Engine knocks are never good things to have.

What’s best case scenario? Like, I assume worst would be a full engine rebuild (or new engine) but obviously something would need to be done to correct the knock.

Could just be a noisy lifter, but I doubt it. Engine rebuild should be planned for.

In the short term, you could run a lower viscosity oil to mask the symptoms. That might buy you some time while you decide on next steps.

Best case scenario, somebody has put the wrong spark plugs in it or something stupid.
Worst case scenario, it’s about to blow.

Always wanted one of these Broncos... Maybe one day.
As for this one I say give it a shot. Even if the engine does blow a replacement would be cheap. Or you could likely sell it for at least $500 with a blown engine

‘93 was the newer front end, like my truck.

To make the knock stop, let the connecting rod in.

Best case is to paint it to match OJ’s!

It was really more of a facelift though, calling them different generations would be like calling the ‘05 and ‘10 Fusions different cars.

That would mean every F series and Bronco was the same from 1981 to 1996.

Pretty much. Chrysler did the same thing with Dodge pickups from ‘72 to ‘94 in a much more blatant way.

I know, I’m kind of in that column too. Wife said she didn’t GAF so unless its a pile when I go look at it I might get it. Not like I need another vehicle, but damn.

I’d pass. I had a 96 for 10 years with the 351 and it was fantastic. My dad got one a few years after mine with the 302 and it just wasn’t enough for the Bronco. Wait till you can find one with a 351, or if it’s rust free pull the trigger and source a 351 to swap in.
