Here is an email I just received this morning from my mechanic regarding my Maserati GranTurismo S, which is one of the <300 cars with the 599 F1 gearbox.
“[Our head mechanic] looked into your clutch problem, he said the clutch is dragging and it has been adjusted as far as it can go. At this point, it’s time for a new clutch. I am looking up the parts and labor to give you a quote, he said to call him if you have any questions.”
Yipe!
Anyone care to place a bet on what the ultimate cost will be?

So we’re going for parts and labor here? I’m gonna say $5000.

Right. Hear me out.
1. Buy 6sp manual transaxle from GranSport/4200GT
2. Sell 599 F1 gearbox for $$$
3. Swap in said 4200GT transaxle
4. ???
5. Profit (if by profit, you mean increased kudos on Jaloppositelock, which you’re not exactly lacking in...)
Oh, do I remember correctly that you have a flickr account? New job calls for new backgrounds :)

I’ve actually thought about this before. I should have asked the mechanic what he thought that would cost. It would be 100% more awesomer.

$7400. Plus a month waiting for parts from Maserati, if my experience with the 2 ‘04 Spyders we work on is anything to go by.

When I was at CCC we had a Gran Turismo cab in the fleet, great sound, good looks, but goddamn did it handle badly. Felt like a tie-rod or something was broken (it wasn’t broken, we checked) going over rough road the way it would shimmy.

Was yours an S? Mine handles very well. Not M3 well, but better I think than a 612.

Not an S, I think the chopped top didn’t help either.

You’ll need the electronics as well. Didn’t these have an E-diff? That makes it more complicated.

Probably not. I would bet Maser just cuts the top off, adds no stiffening, and goes “eh, good enough”.

Ah, bit of googling tells me that they had a clutch-type LSD so all’s good on that front :)

But you still have the issue of switching from a ECU controlled trans with auto blip etc to a gated manual.

Ah, I see what you mean. People swapping 6-speeds into Jaguar XKs have this problem. Most run some sort of box of tricks/map that mimics the ECU into thinking it’s getting signals from the auto-box. AFAIK that’s how Jaguar themselves did it on the first XKRS
If you want to do it properly you could run a standalone ECU, but that adds to costs.

If it’s too expensive, just get your mechanic to swap in a GM TH400... LOL
