What is the current stance on "fake" exhaust tips?

Dear oppo,

I fondly remember the Lexus IS-F being bashed for having exhaust tips fitted to the bumper rather than the actual exhaust ends. Even back then, it was somewhat known that they went that route in order to a) create a sound they wanted and b) to avoid the bumper itself becoming too hot or even melting from excessive exhaust temperatures.

Now, if you look closely (in some photographs it’s more obvious than in others) at the Mercedes C63 Coupe and other examples from the House of Merc, they seem to be taking the exact same route. They do, however, not get much flak for it.

Why?

Taking into context the “tips” fitted to the bumper, the actual exhaust pipes look comically small in comparison; it’s a worse ratio than seen on the Lexus back then.

What’s wrong with the exhaust being fitted in a matter seen on, say, a 991 GT3? Pretty sure you get to see the actual exhaust fidgeting around under hard acceleration. Is this a potential cost issue I am not aware of, or does it just lessen the impression of solidity manufacturers aim for?

Educate me, k10xb. Feel free to rant, too.

I think all of these “fake” exhausts are primarily done for aesthetics and I’m not a fan of it to be honest, I prefer having my real genuine exhaust tips on show because they look great and also should something come loose I wont have my exhaust rattling on some fake tip

Partially, I think it’s to give it the aggressive look that large tips have without also making the exhaust super loud, which larger tips have a tendency to do. In addition to the other things you’ve listed.

I am old enough to automatically assume that a car with a more prominent exhaust setup is innately more powerful than a car without one.

These days, even the frugal versions get the “power” look, despite not really emitting any such noise. Worst offenders off the top of my head are the Audi A6 ultra s and the VW Passat of the moment.

Kinja'd!!!

To me, it feels like they went “Ah, screw it, just put big tips on everything! ”

Remember, the Audi A6 ultra is supposed to be super-frugal, not sporty. Still got the same treatment.

The actual reason is that your exhaust moves around. quite a bit actually. So by isolating the actual exhaust from the tip, you can get it to sit IN the bumper without a buttload of gap, else it’d bang up the bumper elsewise.

Well, we can’t hate all of them. Look at the P1. Who would hate that?

Dammit . Probably alerted some content blacklists with that, too.

I would not question it on a car like the P1, where it was very likely an engineering-based decision. The P1 still sounds rad and has the naturel to mach, so I can’t be mad.

Slightly more curious why some get away with it and others do not ... maybe it was just bad for the Lexus because it was, to some extent, the first model to pull of such a design detail.

The current stance is similar to the initial stance, in that fake exhaust finishers are the devil, Bobby Boucher!

To me it was never about the exhaust being fitted to the bumper. I just think it looks very strange with stacked and offset exits.

The fake/real stuff is mostly just a bunch of crap, since a lot of “dual” exhausts are just dual outlet singles.

All the new AMGs do this fake tip thing, I don’t like it. My AMG has real tips.

I still have mixed feelings about the look myself. I liked it on the IS-F, I hated it on the Ferrari California, which did it slightly after Lexus.

The best stacked or cluster exhausts have to be the Zonda’s and the LFA’s. Everything else looks weird to me. :)

They’re aftermarket items, but the exhaust is stock as it is pictured there. It’s weird when cars look like they have been fiddled with straight from the factory.

I like them. They typically work with the aesthetics of the car. And wouldn’t plain ol’ round pipes on every single car be a little boring after a while?

On the sunny side, the AMGs do get the sound bit right.

There’s not exactly a shortage of exhaust tip forms, especially once you factor in potential aftermarket solutions ... I just find it weird to put an exhaust-y looking bit there instead of just leaving out any kind of obvious tip. To me, the classy approach (looking at you, old S500) was always to simply hide the tips behind the rear bumper.

It’s like cheaping out. If you can afford to produce a Nice luxury car you can make real exhaust tips. Put some nice titanium tipped exhaust on there or something.

Plenty of cars in the past were made with non-round tips and of other shapes. Could be done with a real exhaust.

I made a post on this a little bit ago. My stance on the subject is that it’s tantamount to fraud. What was wrong with normal exhaust?

It’s apparently a solution to the problem of both exhaust movement and heat transmission, as well as a means of aesthetic enhancement if you will.

I’m still on your side of things, even after hearing some coherent arguments for it.

See it this way, though: even a Lamborghini can do it now.
