So the first time this ad was posted the “ONE OWNER” identified the cars as Saabs. Which is why I first saw this ad. I see the “ONE OWNER” must have just remembered they’re actually Renault Dauphines.

Of course they’re beat to hell, not running, and stacked on top of each other . What does this amazing genius decide they must be worth? $4500 each.

They wouldn’t even be worth that if they were in fact Saabs - which were much better cars when new, and much more collectible now. The Dauphine was pretty much the Yugo of its era. No it wasn’t inherently bad in and of itself, but its primary appeal was that it was cheap. They sold a ton of them, so they’re not rare - they got a bad reputation so they’re not desirable.

Either the seller is waiting for the biggest moron in the universe to walk up and hand him a wad of cash, or they don’t know what money is and just picked a fun number.

I’m moved to write a post about the many reasons why old cars are hardly ever worth as much as an owner thinks they are.

I wonder how many decades ago it was parked.

Hey. Dude. Slow your roll.

He’s not selling a car or two. He’s selling a ART INSTALLATION. It’s like the Cadillac Ranch without Cadillacs, or a ranch, and before all that graffiti stuff. This is a BARGAAAIN!

Bonus points: The guy who parked the one on top shouted “LIKE A GLOVE” when it settled to immobility.

Good ones are pretty hard to find. Unfortunately those aren’t good ones.

There was a really nice one on ebay earlier this year that went for 8K or so. But I could see pouring 4K into these and not being close.

The thing about the Dauphine is that even amongst Renault guys it’s not particularly desirable. It’s not odd/rare/old enough like the 4cv, nor is it as fun to drive as the R8. It’s not as practical or comfortable as an R16 or Le Car. Aside from the Alliance it seems the least desirable of the U.S. models - not that they can’t be fun in the way all old cars are fun, just that the market for Dauphines is small and the supply of so-so condition Dauphines is pretty large relatively.

Oh, it has its following. It’s small and cute and people stick larger motors in them. I think they’re quite pretty when done up right. And they still sold over a million of them worldwide. R16’s, 18’s and Fuegos and even our beloved Le Cars are definitely much less desirable in the collector world.

Hmm, I dunno if I’d agree. The dauphine has does have a certain appeal to somebody who just wants something old and “weird” - but if you hang around on the renault forums you’ll see a lot more people looking for things like Le Car than Dauphine. It’s probably easier to find Dauphines than Le Cars too.

Yeah, I don’t think those people, of which I am one, are too representative of the larger collector car world. The Le Car is looked upon with more disdain although people are beginning to notice that there aren’t many left. A good Dauphine will still fetch almost twice what a good Le Car will. Neither is close to an A, but the Dauphine at least has age in its favor.
