When last we left the car I’d !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
We spent Saturday wandering Pick’n Pull yards trying to find a motor, only to discover there were none to be had. Yard guy told me they get bought up as soon as they show up and are shipped to South America by a couple exporters. Dammit South America! We need toyota 4-cylinders up here too, stop being greedy!
I also have been surfing craigslist looking for a motor-swap candidate, but all the good possibilities were sold by the time I contacted them.
In the mean time I seafoamed the engine in hopes of helping limp it along a bit more. Instead it appears to have made it worse. Now it is definitely chugging where before it was running (relatively) smooth.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! tells of bad valve seals and poor piston ring design causing oil consumption in these motors. So I bit the bullet and ordered $135 worth of rings, crank bearings, valve seals & head gaskets set. And in two weeks I’ll be tearing apart my first motor. I’m also going to be replacing at least one coil to hopefully help with a separate issue of it throwing misfire codes.

It’s kind of awesome, having an excuse to rebuild a motor on a car that you don’t have to care that much about.
It can’t be that hard right? You know what’s wrong, so its just following instructions from a shop manual...

Why don’t you just hop in the TARDIS, go back to a point in time when these motors were new and fresh, and pull an almost new one out of a car that was totaled with low mileage?
