In my quest to catch ‘em all and fill my Jalop Pokedex I find myself the owner of a rowdy little 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA. It’s got a roll bar, stiff suspension a booming exhaust, so you know, trackdaybro. Hopefully I can save some gas and have a couple goofy years in this little red imp.

Initial observations

It has the same rev range as my Triumph (similar cruising rpm/shift points)

I’m 6’ but I think there’s ample space

When you tell people you’re buying a Miata they act as though you said you bought a new handbag (it’s a satchel Indiana Jones had one!).

Just my personal opinion, but posts like this one, preferably with a little more content, are so much more interesting than some buy guide for some kind of new car.

More of this, less corporate stuff.

I think part of it is because used cars gain personality as they age, and you live with the car and get to know it like a personal relationship. Compared to a new car review where it’s like a colder more factual performance evaluation.

Also around here it’s real talk form like minded individuals vs reworded press releases. Sure new car reviewers can mix it up, and to Jalop editors credit they try, but I there’s a limit to what they can talk about.

The paint could use some cleaning up and there may be some front fender rust to clean up, but for the price, with limited slip and the top, it seems like a pretty good deal. Depending upon how pristine you want it will determine the price to fix the fender. If your height becomes a problem, you might want to research seat foamectomy. If you have some tools and a place to work on it, you can learn a lot from the NA. Miata.net has been a huge resource for me in working on mine. You may want to check it out for a guide on baselining the maintenance. Just don’t bother with their search tool, instead use Google to search their site by adding “site:miata.net” to the end of your search words. Congrats!
