So I finally got my garage cleaned up and organized enough (still not done) to make some progress on a two seat bench. I also got a wood burning tool and was able to burn in some designs. Now I need to stain before putting on the seats (not wood) and the middle table (being stained separately).
I know I should use an oil based stain but I was wondering if people had opinions on pre-tinted versus tintable stain and the best way to go about doing it for this application.
I think the wood burning came out pretty well for my first time and I think it’s something I’ll continue to do in the future. Oppopinions and criticism welcome.

I’ve done a lot of refinishing and I’ve always had good success with oil based stain. I hand apply the stain and the first coat of poly and then spray the last 2 coats of poly via HVLP.
I’m also jealous that you get to stain fresh wood and not something covered in 75 years worth of glop.

The center table top is going to be a re-purposed old shelf that cleaned up nicely after a healthy date with the belt sander. You use poly after for all outdoor stuff?
I have an unhealthy desire to quit my job and become a folk artist/craftsman so the plan is to start doing more refinishing and woodburning on furniture I can pick up off CL or yard sales and doing it either to fill my free time or get good enough to actually quit my job haha

Is it going to live its whole life outside? For some reason I thought it was going to be used for tailgating or the like. I would probably not bother with poly if it’s going to be an outdoor bench. I’d just go for some quality outdoor stain from an actual paint store vs. a big box place.
I’m with you on the fun-times-with-wood. Something very cathartic about woodworking to me.

Most likely a covered porch and in the garage for winter.
Thanks for the tips

I’ve been wanting to get started with woodworking but don’t know how to start and what I would need, do you have any advice to give me?

I got lucky and my dad has a ton of tools (that he doesn’t use anymore) and I’ve done a few small projects here and there growing up. But as far as what you need I would say a decent drill (with bits), sander (type can vary but sanding by hand sucks), jigsaw, skill saw, chop saw (for easy angled cuts), and space to work.
As far as picking up skills, I would suggest heading over to the workshop and read through some of their stuff. A good way to get wood for practice and certain rough applications is wood pallets that businesses will just give away. Don’t be afraid to create a total piece of shit as long as it’s cheap. Most of what I’ve done has used cheap wood and re-purposed materials.
