My D’oh moment after I prep a few 2x4’s and then find out they aren’t tall enough to fit a piece of glass over the tailgate. So luckily I had some 2x6 in garage, cut a little larger to length, now I have to break out the router again and set up the inside & outer top edges. Below is how the top will be routered to have a smooth edge & space to fit the glass.

I’m thinking exposed fasteners, retaining the hinge and metal stop thing. I’ll also have to figure out a way to keep it from falling in. Not sure if I want OSB, plywood or a 1x10 on bottom.

Maybe use the top of the legs if they sit inside the frame to hold the tailgate up.

I think what I’ll do is router the bottom same as the top, then cut the 1/2” plywood to fit right in there.

When I used at 6” board there is now a 1.25” gap from where the bottom of the glass will be to the “top” of that chrome trim piece. Running the router along the bottom will raise the tailgate up a 1/2” so that gap won’t be as big. I’ll paint the plywood black, and the stain I picked up is gunstock. It should contrast nicely. I think I’ll be rewriting All this either on my own blog or here as a grand summary and see if I can get FP on Truck yeah or Jalopnik.

Please do. I’d like to build one of these myself soon so any guide is helpful. Throw me a link if you make such a post and I’ll put it on OppositeBlog - the editors often pick posts from there.

Yeah I’ll do a final write up, as well as updates on Oppo using the tailgate table tag. It’s going to take me a little while as I’m working out of town during the week sometimes. Since it’s going into my livingroom I’m taking the extra steps like using a router, sanding, stain prep, stain, and polyurethane coatings.

I haven’t decided wether to use actual glass or cut down a sheet of Lexan because kids.

I’ll likely include a slap together guide also for someone that’s not going to use more than a saw & drill & use a plexiglass top.
