How to replace rear discs and pads on a 4th gen Camry

1. Need brakes

Kinja'd!!!

2. Remove wheel (easy) and spread pads to push piston back into caliper to make room for new fat ass pads (easy). Then remove lower 12mm bolt to pivot caliper up out of the way (medium). Push caliper back off the slide, noticing that Toyota left you 1mm of space to get the caliper off the slide without having to remove the brake line, or the sway bar link that’s in the way (HARD).

Kinja'd!!!

3. Find a breaker bar for the 14mm bolts that hold the caliper bracket/pad saddle/whatever you wanna call it. The jack from your Trans Am (if applicable) will work.

Kinja'd!!!

4. Remove pads and compare your worn out old shit to the new awesome shit you got from Napa because they’re cheap and they work well as experienced on your Subaru.

Kinja'd!!!

5. Then REALLY look at your old pads that... might be original? Unless Toyota puts that old school stamp on ALL their pads, and the previous owner actually put Toyota pads on the car. If original, 240k is a long fucking time for them to last holy sheet.

Kinja'd!!!

I mean, even the shims look original. Just like the ones in my Chilton manuals.

Kinja'd!!!

6. Remove crunchy old rotor. If you’re lucky, it will pull right off. If less lucky, a simply whack or two with a hammer (I use a 5lb sledge) will dislodge the rust holding it on. If a LOT less lucky, you will need to rotate the rotor so that the rubber plug with the slot in it is at 6 0’cock and ratchet the parking brake shoes (clockwise) in away from the rotor.

Kinja'd!!!

7. Just look at it

Kinja'd!!!

8. LOOK AT IT. I have squeaks from the parking brake but there’s a little bit of shoe left so I just lubed the shit out of it... all that purple.

Kinja'd!!!

9. If all looks good under there, slap the new rotor on.

Kinja'd!!!

10. Take rotor off and re-position because you forgot to line up the hole in the hub with the hole in the rotor to adjust the parking brakes if needed. Then pop in that plug.

Kinja'd!!!

11. Clean and lube saddle bracket,anti-rattle clips, and install pads....

Kinja'd!!!

12. Install saddle back onto car..... ummm....

Kinja'd!!!

13. There, that’s better. Don’t end up on JustRolledIntoTheShop

Kinja'd!!!

14. Put all the shit back on, step back, and marvel at your work and think “SHIT. I should have painted the calipers.

Kinja'd!!!

15. GO FOR A DRIVE.

Hooray, no more grinding. Pedal feel is MUCHO BETTERO. Now, just need to wait until the hard ass front pads wear away so I can put some of those sexy PBR’s on the front too.

Lol those rotors are so little! Look how big rear rotors for my Yukon are:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Side note: Mine has the HD trailer package so the rear rotors are more than 1” thick.

They cost me $76/each. These are just spares though, I always buy rotors just in case I need them when I change the pads.

I think toyota still stamps parts with the old logo, I’ll check when I get home.

I wish mine could be that cheap! My pads alone are a good $50/pair.

It makes a good breaker bar.
