Basically, it reminds me of cell phones right at the time of the Motorola RAZR. The companies put out whatever crappy products they feel like, and people buy them because they don’t really see a better option. You’re STARTING to see what I call “consumer-driven” products, where they start designing them based on what people actually want, but it still hasn’t hit full speed, where it becomes competitive and success comes from being “the best” instead of just being there.
If it’s not obvious, I’m thinking about swapping the head unit in the BRZ. I’d LIKE to keep the Nav, but based on how shitty most of these units seem in terms of interface, I’m hesitant. The Android Auto units are intriguing (now that I’ve gone back to my Nokia, of course) but also pricey. Anyone have any experience with double-din navigation head units?

I think this is precisely why Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are trying to become things.

All the aftermarket head units re designed for kids with neon shit and tiny-ass buttons :(
And of course, they’re also driven by price.

I want to put one in my ML.
But it's not worth it.

It took me so damn long to find a head unit for my car that didn’t look like it belonged in a crapped out civic on rimz with haphazardly wired subs in the back. Is it that hard to design a clean and simple head unit with two knobs and a couple buttons for presets and settings, like really?

My stereo in the 99 miata is pretty shit. But finding a head unit that isn’t all bells and whistles, and is good seems to be a problem. I don’t want nav, just 4 speakers and no extra lights.

Aftermarket audio head units just suck. They either feel cheap or look cheap, or function like shit. My sti has the stock radio and I couldn’t be happier (hint, 04 sti’s don't have a radio). My m3 has oem idrive, and it's actually a good system. Nice tactile feedback, feels quality, looks good. Great for switching through audio. Why can't I get something like that aftermarket, but no, I'm stuck with a hunk of brick head unit that isn't sensitive worth shit and nearly unusable. Look up the car computer set ups with tablets, that's what I would go with if I didn't have such a wonderful exhaust.

A nice clean looking head unit should be easier to find. Why do you need a massive screen surrounded by thirty buttons the size of my fucking fingernail tip?!

Parrot seems to get the idea. Hopefully the new one is decent.

What did you end up buying?

Yeah, but knowing Parrot it will cost twice as much as another unit which has similar or slightly better functionality, but slightly cheaper build quality. Not necessarily a bad thing, but still.

A Kenwood which ended up being both the best looking and cheapest one I looked at.
Doesn’t
quite
match the factory lights in the car, but at least it isn’t blue like the original one.

Hasn’t come to the US yet, and will be expensive I’m sure, but I wish it was a more common design.

I looked at one of their current offerings, and immediately looked elsewhere when I read that you can’t adjust the volume unless you’re in the actual audio screen. The one you linked looks nice, though. I’ll keep my eye on that.

Alternatively, why do we have countless single-din head units with flashing lights and “edgy” buttons, and none that are well thought out or look halfway decent?

This is sort of where I’m leaning. Not sure if it’s worth resurrecting my piece of shit Samsung, though.

Dammit! “ [July 2015 update] RNB6 project was showcased at CES Las Vegas in January 2015 (watch video below). This infotainment system was selected by several automakers who envision to integrate it in their next-generation car models next year and beyond. As of today there is no plan to sell RNB6 in Aftermarket channels as RNB6 embedded technologies require deep integration with car series and manufacturers.”

I believe those are even worse, that should be a hard one to screw up. Those radios seem to still be stuck in the early fast and furious times while everybody else has moved on (except auto zone). But I wasn’t really thinking about those because I’ve become enamored with nicely sized touch screens, I know they are the worse of the choices but I want a touchscreen now.

Ugh. At least update the aftermarket they have now and I would probably buy it.
