Hello fellow Jalops. I need your opinions/advice regarding a potential car purchase. A co-worker is selling his 2002 Honda Passport but it won’t pass smog because of a catalytic converter (must be CA legal). I’ve heard the catalytic converters for this specific model are pretty pricey but besides that, would it be a reliable car to have for a few years? What do you guys think?

2004 was not a model year for the Passport.

A Honda Passepartout will get you were you need to go without being late.

Was the Passport a US only model? I’m in Canada and I have never heard of the Passport

It’s just a rebadged Isuzu. Not worth it really unless the guy is giving it away. My mother had one for about 5 or 6 years. Only “Honda” we’ve ever had that my parents got rid of because it started costing more than it was worth. My mom has driven nothing but Honda’s since the late 80’s when they got married, so it’s not just compared to one or two other Honda’s.

That good? My current ride is 94 Taurus, so would this be a step in the wrong direction?

Yeah it is just a re-badges Isuzu Rodeo.

I’d watch out for the Automatic. The Pilot at this point was the same as the Isuzu Rodeo and they had trans issues. My sister’s crapped out around 120k and cost her about 3 grand to fix.

It’s an Isuzu Rodeo underneath. My dad’s Trooper is 17 years old and has rarely gave him problems. Don’t know if that helps lol.

A coworker had one of these and absolutely hated it. Nothing but problem after problem. He’s a die hard Honda guy, after the Passport he got a CRV (loved it), and two Pilots since then, and he loves those. He had an awful time with the Passport though, and couldn’t wait to get rid of it (leased).

As other mentioned it’s a rebadged Isuzu. Honda was desperate to get in the SUV game and partnered with Isuzu. Isuzu got the best of that deal, and Honda regretted that mistake. You’d be better of with a Saturn Vue that at least can be had with a Honda engine. Or if you can swing it a 1st gen Honda Pilot.

It’s more properly known as the Honsuzu Rodeopass.

As long as its a west coast car, you should be ok. They’re fairly rugged, but will turm to dust at the slightest mention of road salt.
