I’ve always wondered this. Could one possibly import a car and then store it in a storage unit until the 25 years are up?

Someone on the Lada USA forum has a Niva that didn’t meet the import age. He drove it in from Canada when he moved south, with the intention of taking it back, but never got around to it. When the Canadian plates expired, he just parked it in his garage. He got a couple mailed notices from the EPA about it, but they didn’t actually do anything as far as I know.

Darn! I was hoping it’d be all fine and dandy if you never registered and drove it.

I don’t know that anything happened to it, though. Last I knew he still had it. My guess is when he drove it accross the border, he had to get the temporary permit, so that’s how they knew about it.

If however you go the not-so-legal way of just shipping it in a container and only declare it as parts or whatever, they don’t have the resources to check every container, so they wouldn’t know you had it. If however it was discovered in the port, in my mind you’d be more likely to lose it going this way.

But now I’m wondering what actually happened with that Niva, so I’ll do some digging.

It’s federally legal.
