After the poor results at Infiniti, and the lackluster (at best) results from everything he has touched at Cadillac, Johan de Nysschen has started this craziness:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Speaking yesterday to analysts and as reported by Automotive News, Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen has put a timetable on the luxury brand’s move toward autonomy from General Motors. The executive says he expects the brand to splinter from GM and have “a far higher degree of autonomy and self sufficiency” by 2017.

By 2017, it is more likely he will be former Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen and trying to con a third CEO into hiring him.

But this is actually a good idea. You can’t position Cadillac as a premium brand if you’re customers see new CTS’ on the same lot as Buicks and Chevys. Cadillac need their own dealership network and their own technicians to work on Cadillac cars. They also need specific training for consumers to receive a correct luxury car buying experience. With the Escalade pulling in big sales and money it shouldn’t be an issue.

How is that working for Lincoln?

Keep dreaming. If GM really terminated the bankrupting ways of the past, they will not only not fire him, but they will extend his contract, because he has something that not many people in GM’s management have, vision. As opposed to pushing stealerships to chug out cars, at any cost, without any consideration for customers and for brand image. Of course that GM can always go back to make fun of their rivals, only to get bitch slapped soon after.

Also, wouldn’t a future job as a brand boss be the 4th, for Johan? After Audi, Infiniti and Cadillac?

Cadillac needs distance. I’m just not Nysschen is the right guy for such sweeping change.

Some question as to who was calling the shots/deserving of credit at Audi/VW- especially seeing they improved when he left, and Infiniti and now Cadillac went in the tank while he was there. My guess is he ends up at one the Chinese manufacturers next.

former Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen

By that point, he’ll just be known as JN1 and his progeny will follow a similar system (JN2, JN3), unless they get fat and they’ll have an “X” added to the name (JX2).

I disagree. The move to new york, the jacking up the price to signal quality, the baffling bad advertising, hiring marketing people who don’t like cars all have lead to them losing a relatively massive amount of position to their direct competition despite the engineers (and GM) given him TWO new outstanding cars (ATS and CTS lines). Setting up separate dealerships would cut the traffic to them immensely and again lead to a ton of costs with very very low ROI. Barra needs to cut her losses and bring in someone who has an actual track record of success when they were calling the shots. Bring back Bob Lutz!

They do have all that. Stepdad’s Dealership is Cadillac only, with Cadillac techs and its own specially designed building. So was the dealership I worked at. I was trained in Cadillac service, not GM service.

That is well and good, but are you saying every Cadillac dealership exists solely as a Cadillac dealership not attached to a GMC dealership?

Maybe not every, but literally every single one I’ve seen. Pine Belt Cadillac, Gold Coast Cadillac, Crown Cadillac, Brogan Cadillac, McGuire Cadillac.....every single Cadillac dealer I've ever encountered has been a standalone place.

I like the idea of Cadillac having more independence from GM. Lexus is the model to follow here, with shared corporate Toyota engineering, but very separate brand, design, dealers, sales, and service.

I’m a big GM fan, and buy a lot of their product, including Cadillac. But I agree that Cadillac is too close to the other GM brands now, and unfortunately the other brands, dealerships, sales and service bring Cadillac down. I don’t think Cadillac can ever succeed with their new, higher, peer equivalent pricing model until the brand can stand on its own more.

Around here GMC is usually paired with Buick not Cadillac, but of course that doesn’t mean it’s never done.

In fact, I literally just found out 2 days ago that there are some Cadillac dealerships that are also Buick/GMC places.

That’s part of the issue I think.
