Kinja'd!!!

These make me really want to buy a bike.

Then I go to work and run the numbers on local accidents and I crawl under my desk and cry.

Oh, there’s also a brand new WRX(maybe STI) in the parking lot without any license plates.

the hell pipes are those? thats not OEM.....

as for number on local accidents. 99% of all motorcycle accidents can be avoided by the rider. not all of them are caused by the rider. but if your smart, and you pay attention to the dam road and stop thinking about how good janet looked in a skirt at the office today, I would almost argue its SAFER then a car, as you can lanesplit and get away from rear enders. (i’ve done it. car that got rear ended instead as a police car)

In no way at all is riding a motorcycle safer than driving a car. It isn’t even something you can argue.

the fact that i got out of that crash with no scratch and the cruiser was, to put it bluntly, destroyed, suggests otherwise.

So, you can avoid rear enders. Congratulations, you can avoid accidents which are rarely fatal. Want to know what you can’t avoid?

Cars turning in front of you

Semis turning into you

Getting run over by a semi after your bike is struck by a deer

The accidents all happened in the last 2 months and there were several more that I didn’t link. In that same time span, there has been TWO fatal car crashes which I could find. You can advocate all you want for motorcycle ridership, but don’t use a stupid argument. It’s flat out more likely to kill you than driving a car.

1: i dont go fast enough to no be able to stop in time
2: i dont stick around semis
3: refer to #1 about not being able to stop in time.

like I said. 99% of all bike accidents can be avoided by the rider.

Now, whether or not the rider chooses to be a dumbass and not give himself enough room, thats a totally different story.

Doesn’t change the fact that you’re over 20 times more likely to die than driving a car.

And what does not being able to stop in time have to do with hitting a deer? I can tell you for a fact that a deer running out of the woods at nearly 50mph will get in front of you well before you can stop, likely before you can even slow down at all.

thats why you dont DO 50mph in woods.

also, dear whistles. (just saying)

It is dangerous. And that’s a little bit of why we like it.

EDIT: Should also mention, everyone takes risks in their life. Some people more than others. Kind of like skydiving. It’s possible to die in so many different situations under circumstances out of your control. The best you can do is just be prepared. There are advantages and disadvantages obviously but to each their own. By the way, I’ve ridden on the road/track over 35k miles with no accidents.

OHHHHH diesel, edition. right. Now i remember that. I was pissed because I thought they had actually made a diesel ducati and I wanted one.

The deer is running at 50mph. And they cross highways all the time. Are you saying that you crawl along on the highway at about 20mph watching for deer all the time?

Also, this is the stretch of road the biker was on -

I understand completely. But saying it’s safer than driving a car is just ignoring all the facts that say otherwise.

if its THAT open, then the rider should have seen the deer coming. Thats his fault.

You’re telling me that if a deer came out of these trees/river area on the left, in the dark, going 50mph, while you’re doing 50-60, that you would be able to avoid the deer 100% of the time?

I wouldnt BE there in the dark. I know what my limits are and I stay within them.

simple as that.

or, if I HAD to be there, I wouldnt be doing 50.

Nope. Same power train as a standard Monster 1100EVO. Just designed with the DIESEL guys so you get some cool visual details.

Edit: I'm dumb. Thought it was 696. It's actually an 1100cc 2v.

He’s in Canada, and his comment reads that he did it to avoid being rear ended. In other words he stayed aware, checked behind him, and when he saw something about to hit him then he used his escape route and stayed safe. I’m pretty sure that is textbook riding 101.

Your reports are really short on details. The first two are so short on details that it is quite likely the riders were doing double the speed limit.

It’s a bit odd, I can’t think of many instances where I would be unable to brake and avoid either of your first two scenarios unless I was going more than 15-20mph faster than said vehicle and was already even with the rear bumper. I have on more than one occasion had to stop my bike because of dumbasses turning into me when I was already next to their passenger window. Proper lane position, road awareness, staying near the same speed as the flow of traffic, and always driving as if the vehicles around me will suddenly try and kill me meant I was ready and avoided the situation.

Generally speaking, if you ride the way you are trained to ride and stay aware, and ATGATT, then it is pretty safe. Yes, we trade the safety of the cage for body armor, near instantaneous acceleration/braking and extreme maneuverability.

The deer scenarios aren’t too different for many cars. There are lots of instance of deer going through windshields and into the passenger compartment. Not too mention that your specific example has nothing to do with the motorcycle or the deer, and everything to do with a driver not paying attention to road conditions properly. She could have been ejected from a car that hit a deer and had the same thing happen. Though if she was ATGATT then she probably would have stood up immediately and not been in the road.

From what I can tell most fatalities on motorcycles can be avoided if the operator is not a SQUID, and remembers he/she is not invincible.

But can it get in front of me before I can accelerate and/or swerve? Braking is not always the correct option. And the fact remains that it does fit in the general rule of driving - do not drive faster than what is correct for conditions. Deer jump into cars frequently, and crash through the windshield injuring/killing the occupants.

The gear the rider is wearing has a lot to do with how safe/alive the rider stays. Staying attentive while riding, ATGATT, and riding sanely does make it approximately as safe as a car for me. You just have to know your vehicle and operate it like that type of vehicle needs to be operated.

I guess I’ll say it another way: Put a car, a motorcycle and a gun next to each other, fill the vehicles with fuel, and the gun with bullets. Now, never touch any of them. Which of those things is inherently more dangerous than the rest. I guarantee that the car and motorcycle will never kill anyone unless a tornado picks them up and hits someone with them.
Operators make things dangerous.

Actually, my anecdotal evidence on deer whistles and vehicles says that they increase the odds of a deer hitting the vehicle. All my friends (growing up in Illinois) who had them on their cars hit deer.

1) Take the motorcycle safety foundation course. You’ll know fastif it is something for you and you’ll get some good groundwork for skill building

2) Buy a cheap, simple bike. Like 1000$ that needs some work. Learn to work and maintain this bike yoruself. Older UJM (universal japanese motorcycles) are pretty easy as are 250cc sport bikes that will be lighter and easier to handle. Older UJMs will need newer brakes and tires but in all honesty, they aren’t going to try to rip you face off, even when they have a larger engine (just......just avoid the 1000+cc bikes, even old motors still put down serious grunt).

3) FInd some slow speed roads that are fun. Especially by parks. I have a neat litle test route by a lake that takes me through a downtown area. Perfect for practicing starts and low speed turns.

4) Move out further and further, finding new destinations and side roads. The game is to avoid traffic and focus on the bike and learning how to ride.

5) Keep up maintenance and repairs and ride the wheels off.

I’m finally onto step 5. It is teh sex. How can traffic hit me when I ride where there is no traffic? OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I hear ya man.

I even took the MSF course and received my motorcycle license a few months back. I enjoyed the MSF course, but wasn’t necessarily completely in love with riding after.

I pretty much only want a bike to do things you shouldn’t be doing on a bike. Like, bomb backroads, speed, etc. Too many stories on reddit and other sites about a bit of gravel on the road highsiding someone, or glass in the road at night making a biker lowside. Hell, Guy Martin just crashed his shit and is suffering from a broken back right now.
