I’m not sure myself. I’ll be honest, I just want Underground 3 and this looks like it might be it but at other times it looks more like the NFS games of recent time.

I’m not looking forward to the always online aspect. It failed for the crew and it’s been sketchy for recent NFS games

Is it true that there isn’t a manual shifting option?

Wait, what? It’s always online? Bollocks!

All depends on how it drives, so I’ll save judgement until I have a go.

Judging by my experience with Rivals and knowing that this is made by Ghost, the same people who made Rivals, it’s going to be marketed as the greatest game on earth and will end up being hated in 1 minute on release date. The customizability is fantastic in this game, but all the little problems in Rivals hopefully don’t carry over to this.
Rivals always consistently had server issues with its always-online policy, and this meant about a third of your gaming time was waiting for the game to connect to a different server. Another issue with Rivals was that cops would engage in pursuits even if you did nothing. And it was nearly impossible to escape them.
With that being said, wait 2-3 months and scoop it up when it’s on sale because nobody’s buying this new NFS.

Pass. NFS has pretty much bungled every PC release since the hot pursuit reboot, and I don’t doubt EAs skill at bungling up the latest. I also can’t wait for the inevitable day one server issues they’re going to have here as they try yet again to shove global internet infrastructure between the game and it’s customers.
It’s a real shame. I really like the idea behind it - street race with some of the most well known personalities in auto culture, and I still get chills from that cheesy E3 trailer. But...no. The market is saturated with awesome racing games. It’s going to be a long time before I catch myself buying a Need For Speed game.

Manual shifting never suits any game with “Nitrous”...

Cautiously optimistic? The NFS series has almost consistently sucked since Carbon (the Hot Pursuit reboot being the exception), but I really really want this one to be good. I’ll probably wait until a demo or something comes out to see how it plays and go from there.

NFS Underground was the first game I used manual shifting on. I’d use manual on Mario Kart if I could, actually that’s not true but NFS should have manual.

I played rivals for half a hour and that was enough. Worst $60 I’ve ever spent. The game was pretty much an EXACT copy of Hot Pursuit (even the map was damn near identical) but with way worst features(like you said cops being dicks).
Hot Pursuit was ten times more fun than rivals and it’s still one of my favorite NFS games ever.
Hot Pursuit & Most Wanted were pretty much the best ones IMO. A modern underground would be pretty epic too.

I completely agree with you on that but we must be due for a good one they brought back over dramatic FMV this must be the sign of incoming greatness or NFS: Undercover 2.0. Hmmm, now I’m worried.

The car list and customization make me want this game so badly, and the fact that you can adjust the physics to how drift-oriented or grip-oriented you want it gives me hope that the physics wont suck.
Fingers crossed

I got Rivals because I believed it would be an even more epic Hot Pursuit. Boy was I wrong.

Rivals is one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played. It took me a few days to realize that the only way you can escape the cops is by driving to the nearest safe house, which of course automatically truncates all your earnings up until that point. And if you get caught, you get paid nothing for all the races you just wasted your time completing. It’s almost impossible to make decent money in that game, I’m constantly broke. Coupled with getting booted mid-race due to server problems, it’s one of the worst games of recent years.

Mixed.
Customization: Personalizing the cars is a good thing, and it was always interesting to make a car with a 10-star rating on U2 that didn’t look like utter shit, but I feel with this one its just going to be an orgy of rivets and stanced Rocket Bunny nonsense (I have seen some dev moodboards, RIVET ALL THE THINGS).
Graphics: Personally I don’t give much of a shit about graphics (one has to as a GT6 player) and personally I liked the graphical style of newer NFS games, except for the always wet cars which just looks lazy and feels like unnecessary eye candy to me. Atleast incorporate that shit better and only make the cars appear wet during and shortly after a rain period, seriously games from the 2000s already did it better than NFS does in 2015.
Gameplay: This is obviously the crucial part. I assume its going to be the same arcadey shit as the past couple of years, I don’t have very high hopes that the handling is going to be particularly good, one of the reasons why I mostly didn’t bother with the NFS franchise after ProStreet. I still think that Underground 2 had the best handing model of the arcadey NFS titles, clearly arcade but each car had its own characteristics AND there were some pretty detailed tuning options for the chassis and engine. Is it going to have cockpit view? Probably not. Is it going to have a manual transmission option? Somebody hinted at it but apparently hope is already lost. Remember the original NFS from 1994 had both of these features. In 1994. COPS: My favourite topic when it comes to NFS games. I always hated how the Rozzers were incorporated in recent titles. They appear out of nowhere and instantly start chasing you, of course they are not exciting at all and both way too OP and easy at the same time making them extremely annoying after a short time. They don’t use any real tactics aside from strategically placed roadblocks that coincidentally always have gap just wide enough for a car to pass through them. FUCK THAT. Do away with the awful always online shit, a racing game shouldn’t have that, especially not after that disastrous implementation in Rivals.
Conclusion: I will wait until the finished product gets released. Forza Horizon 2 already does everything better than the new NFS, 10.3/10 better game than NFS - IGN.

Have you seen the FMV? Assuming the driving’s halfway competent, we’re in for a treat. RAZOR CALLAHAN WILL NEVER DIE. Bummer the line was so long at Gamescom—I could have had an answer to the driving competency question if I’d had some more time.

I had to wait 2 months before I could play my copy of Rivals because it required the Xbox hard drive, and I didn’t have one. That alone lowered my enthusiasm for the game. Combined with all the issues and Rivals quickly became a game that’s collecting dust on my shelf.

Blech, I traded in Rivals for Driveclub a while back. It was a good decision.
