So,. my ABS is throwing hissy fits. Works for anywhere for 1-30 minutes, then decides it doesn’t want to work and shuts off (the ABS that is). Funny enough, if I cycle the bike off and back on (I wont even stop rolling) The stupid thing will work again. for another 1-30 minutes.

What gives? The only thing i changed was removed 4 magnets from the front rotor to bring it BACK to actual speeds (with 8 magnets it was reading double).

Whats interesting is that the system will work for those 1-30 minutes. then it stops. What gives?

I already tried DC’ing the battery and leaving it over night, maybe the computer was confused about the sudden 4 signals/rotation VS the 8 signals/rotation. Nothing. I’m going to dump the other 4 magnets in and see if it works.

Bike is a 2008 Sv650.

OH, and before anyone tells me to man up and ride sans ABS, fuck off. My bike isnt a toy, its a tool that I use for getting to and from work and school. I bought it ABS for a reason, and I’m keeping it.
Picture for time.

Anti ABS people are on pat with anti-helmet people. There are no real negatives, only positives.

My guess is wheel speed sensor gaps. Check both of those, front and rear. Do you get an ABS light when it stops working?

I’m a little lost when you say you’re removing magnets from the front wheel. I get how that works, but does the factory system really use magnets on the front? Or does it use a trigger ring on the hub?

ABS is an amazing feature on a bike. You’ll never know how much till you need it.

That being said, I’d start with trying to read the codes (if the ABS throws any). It may be worth going to a dealer and forking over the cash to have them diagnose. From there you can check the sensors, and the teeth. Once you’ve done all that start tracing wires to see if anything is pinched or bare. After that its really the main control box.

but if you want the easy button, give it to a dealer to diagnose.

I should eleborat on that..

the bike has GSX-R 1000 forks on it. they didnt work with the OEM speed sensor, so I getto rigged 8 magnets and a hal sensor as my speedo system (the stock wheel sensor uses the same idea...just set up in a wheel spacer)

the ABS rings are the originals. I actually machined the front rotor to accept it.

yes I get the ABS light. its supposed to do that when its not working.

I’ll double check the gaps. but it doesnt make sense that they would still work at all...

Ah, thanks for the info. You should be able to check the code thats causing the light if you have a paperclip/wire jumper.

The only reason I would guess that is because alot of bad hall sensors will act fine when cold but stop conducting anything when they heat up. ABS always sucks to diagnose IMO.

How long have you had the ABS setup with GSXR forks?

EDIT: What area are you in? The Suzuki dealership might not touch it, but theres probably a lot of other guys in the area that would.

i finished the fork swap 1.5 (2?) months ago. havent had any issues from it, other then speedo reading high. now tht I fixed that, i’m getting the ABS issue.

i dont think its heat...i wont even stop rolling when i cycle the key. on the move. and it will work again. for another 1-30 minutes.

I’m in the northern toronto area. dealer dam near had a heart attack when they first saw my bike with basicly EVERY after market (sans engine mods...and even then it had a slip on and filter)

The gap issue makes the most sense...i DID have to take off the front sensor... so maybe i didnt put it on right. i’ll try that, then i’ll start pulling codes if it doesnt work.

the bike is modified to hell and back. its not the work, but they dont want the liability of working on something to heavily modified and then it coming back to bite them

Then take it to a performance shop. If you haven’t mess with the ABS, you should be fine.

I think I know what the issue is. (and yea, i’ve messed with it...anything and everything that happens to the bike is on me)

Well good luck. The nice part is you can just swap parts until something if fixed.
