movin’ on up! I have been flying fixed-pitch helicopters for about a year and a half now, and I feel pretty good about my abilities (have flown fixed-wing RC for almost 15 years)... now I’m embarking on the next step and have ordered myself up a WL-Toys V977. My birthday is coming up, happy birthday to me!
It’ll be a while before I can do this:
but hopefully I won’t spend more than three or four times the initial purchase price ($110) on repair parts before sucessful inverted flight ;)

I’ve been buzzing one of these around the living room and back yard for a couple of years. It’s a fixed-pitch Blade mSR. My son was getting excited about flying and wasn’t interested in waiting for his birthday, so he robbed his piggy bank and bought an Estes Proto-X nano. In the first week, he flew it into the kitchen and landed it in the enchilada sauce. I had no choice but to rinse it in the sink to get the sauce off. Surprisingly, the only thing I had to replace were the motors. Ten buck and some soldering and he was back in the air.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about flying FPV. I haven’t taken the plunge yet, mostly because I can’t decide whether to go with a quadcopter or plane. The quadcopters look like tons of fun, especially when racing. But they also sound like a swarm of angry mosquitos. Planes are a more serene experience and can fly longer per charge. But quadcopters can be flown in smaller areas. But planes are less likely to fall out of the sky with an electronics failure. But....

Quadcopter racing is really fun to watch.

yeah, I fly park flyers and ultra-light 3d fixed wing. The air time is impressive on fixed wing electrics these days. I have an old Carbon Falcon (which is built like a stunt kite) and with a small brushless and 3s 3500mah battery I can keep it up for about 45 minutes on a charge if I fly lazy, and still over 30 minutes if I’m doing loops and hammerheads... Quads are cool, but the computer has so much input into how they actually fly that I like traditional single-rotor helicopters better for reasons of required skill and control response... I also kinda enjoy fixing them ;)
I've done fixed-wing FPV... its cheaper and if you want a grand vista its easier to accomplish, but I think quads are probably the way to go if you want to FPV obstacle courses and get your "I'm a bird!" On... ;)

Glad to see I’m not the only one who has had that dream! :)
