Is using a gas station or other parking lot type establishment to avoid a traffic light illegal in any state, specifically WI?
Edit: Closest thing on the books about right turns:
SUBCHAPTER V TURNING AND STOPPING AND REQUIRED SIGNALS
346.31 Required position and method of turning at intersections.
RIGHT TURNS. Both the approach for a right turn and the right turn shall be made as closely as practicable to the righthand edge or curb of the roadway. If, because of the size of the vehicle or the nature of the intersecting roadway, the turn cannot be made from the traffic lane next to the righthand edge of the roadway, the turn shall be made with due regard for all other traffic.

I remember back when I first started driving (Live in VA) my dad warned me about this. I always thought it was kind of dumb.. Figured if I got pulled over I could just say “I thought I needed gas buuuuuut never mind”. Have barely ever done this though, at least for me, it'll take just as much time as waiting for the light.

I’m no legal expert, but I don’t see why it’s an issue. Here where I live, there’s a super long light. There’s also a right turn to a gas station just before the light, with a different outlet, that gets me to the intersection I need. I always avoid that light because it’s red for 5 minutes with no traffic, and green for 30-40 seconds. It’s a pain.

Here in Ontario, apparently it is legal as long as there is no “no through traffic” sign. However, if it’s private property, the people who own it can file charges for trespassing.

Here in AZ (as well as other places I’ve lived), they can get you for things like “failure to obey a traffic control device” or some other catch all (due to “skipping” the light).

Its dangerous, for one thing. Both to vehicle and pedestrian travel in the parking lot or at the pumps. Most people who are “sick of waiting” at the light tend to drive quickly through the gas station.

I was always told the same thing. I was also told not to change lanes in the middle of an intersection but turns out that is legal here.

Illinois can get you for “avoiding a signal” if you cut through private property to.. Uhm.. To avoid a signal. I would think WI would be similar.

Technically, the gas station is private property, even though it’s open to the public. Confusing, I know. Trespassing might be too strong a word to describe it, but it’s certainly impolite, like visiting a restaurant just for the purpose of using their bathroom. By entering private property, you are expected to be a patron.
The maneuver is certainly illegal here in Michigan, and is referred to as avoiding a traffic control device. I don’t think its illegality is due to an inherent problem with the action; it’s illegal because such a maneuver would soon get abused. That is to say, you’re not the only one who would take advantage of it. So, to avoid potential streams of traffic cutting through parking lots, the maneuver remains illegal for everybody.

In IL they stressed fairly heavily that you could not do that.

Makes sense, this

It’s illegal in most states and a pretty crappy thing to do. And yes, I have done it myself and nearly got caught.

Most states have legislation that reads it is illegal to avoid a traffic control device. So making a right and then pulling a U-turn to get around a light without stopping would be considered illegal. I would imagine if you indicated your intent to turn and then dipped into the gas station lot to complete your turn it would be illegal.

I’ve done it and I’ve seen it done. But yeah I get why it could be a hazard. Especially in a corner gas station parking lot Corner gas stations like that are usually cramped and confusing enough already. It’d would be different if it was just an empty lot.
