What’s the opinion around here? I think it looks pretty bad ass and they probably perform exellently for a vehicle that never sees pavement.

Most of these images are from pirate4x4 or Google images

I love this “it’s functional, I don’t care what it looks like or what it’s made of” stuff

The only problem I can see would be trying to turn a big heavy wheel/tire through something like mud with stock axle components, especially on small trucks. Other than that im not sure I have an opinion.

Forest Rover - they made about 20 of these. They’ve got an under-drive hub at each wheel to step the gear ratio down.

The CJ and the Willys both have axle swaps, I just browsed the thread they were on. I don’t think they’ll be breaking too much stuff

The Ranger is not using a very large size, but it will still probably break

Only one I like the look of these wheel/tires on.

The others don’t work for me.

That Willys is basically a tractor from the factory lol. It’s got this badass/old-school/rat-rod yet simultaneously a tractor vibe to it which I love

I disagree, I think they’re all pretty bitching, especially the mail buggy

OK I missed the mail buggy, I’m down with the mail buggy.

The Forest Rover has widened axle casings that have been reinforced, and has planetary underdrive hubs at the wheels. I don’t know about anything special with steering, though.

Once upon a time (pre-2010) my uncle had a bobbed ‘53 Power Wagon on gigantic tractor wheels/tires. Had like 5.5 feet of ground clearance. Painted Hess truck livery. He traded it for a ‘43 Willys MB.

The Ranger’s not using actual tractor tires though, so I don’t see why it would break.

That’s awesome. Personally, I would have kept the power wagon.

Yeah, the PW wasn’t street legal though, the Willys is. Now he’s sold his Unimog (yeah, had one of those too) and is saving to buy a Legacy Power Wagon.

My dad built one out of a Landcruiser LJ70. Tipover was an risk, but the hood sat at roof height of other raised 4x4’s, so who cares :D

I don’t think they are dot legal, they might be an atv or irrigation tire. You can still mount an agricultural tire on a street rim if you get one that fits. It looks mostly stock and it won’t break immediately, but it will.

With a Dana 44 locked and lifted, I wouldn’t run more than a 31” to 33” unless you like replacing parts. The Ranger’s axles aren’t nowhere near as strong as a Dana 44.

Holy crap that’s awesome.

I’d love to build a tribute, but you’d have to cut up a classic to do so.

Not so much. If you have one of these with a crushed rear bucket, the rest of the equation would be pretty easy, if pricey. First step, buy a new 109” frame if it wasn’t a 109 already. Second step, get a set of axles widened from your donor, and either get 109 brakes (if you don’t have them) or a conversion. The hardest thing would be sourcing a planetary concentric underdrive hub that would mount up - all the rest of the running gear other than the axle shafts (easy, but pricey) is pretty much stock. The bodywork is a question of notching the firewall (a lot of these have bad footwells anyway) and then bolting new pieces to bone stock.
