While discussing navigation apps with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I put words to the reason why Google’s navigation app pisses me off so much. I made up times and street names and such, but you get the idea.

“Your route is clear and you are on the fastest route it should take you 15 minutes and you should reach your destination by 3:65 PM. In 500 feet, turn left onto interstate 285 pennsylvania highway 322 state highway 322 state route 16 towards freeburg lemmings now turn left onto interstate 285 pennsylvania highway 322 state highway 322 state route 16 towards freeburg lemmings”

It wasn’t such a problem back in NM where streets only had one name, as the lord intended, but here in the godless east where every road has more street names than a member of an early-90’s rap group, it’s become unbearable. I have literally missed turns because the app couldn’t get through the street name fast enough.

Based on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I may try Waze, see how that goes.

I’m a big fan of Waze since it re-directs in realtime based on traffic flow of other “wazers” plus it’ll shout-out if someone else reports cops or a hazard on your route. However, it’s able to do realtime traffic estimates because it’s tracking every Waze user even if the app is off. That may bother you, as it sometimes bothers me. Not that I’m going anywhere clandestine, I just don’t like being followed sometimes.

Edit - It also tracks your average speed, so turn if off if you get pulled over. :)

Edit 2- Unlike Kinja, I’m not still grayed out on Waze. :(

Waze reports traffic accidents and such to Google Maps. I’ve had it say “there is an accident ahead on route 69” and when I tap on it on my phone it says “via Waze app”

I just wish Maps would pause podcasts while giving directions.

I THINK that’s up to the app you’re using for the podcast. I know audiobooks via audible pause, while spotify music just dims.

It still gets annoying though. “I don’t think we should...” TURN RIGHT IN 600 YARDS “...think we should...” NOW TURN RIGHT “...we should really...” CONTINUE ON FOR 2 MILES

Google bought Waze a couple years ago. They seem committed to keeping it as a separate app, but a lot of the Waze traffic data is integrated into Google Maps as well.

Yeah, Maps really needs to know that the next direction is immenant and wait until it has at least a minute or two before the next one (at least with audiobooks, I don’t really care with music).
