Understated elegance: What cars have it?

Watching Mr. Regular’s review of Jagvar’s excellent Phaeton got me thinking. Flashy, dramatic, over-the-top cars are fantastic some of the time, but it’s also nice to have a car that can go unnoticed when need be. Unnoticed, but if you do notice it, you will stare and stare, and slowly appreciate the truly stunning design. A prime example of this is the Aston Martin DB7, and its cousin the Jaguar XK. From a distance, the untrained eye sees just another 90’s soap bar. Once you get close, however, you realize just how wonderful the lines and proportions on this car are. Other Astons have been prettier, but none have simultaneously been quite so subtle. What cars do you think allow you to enjoy them, rather than rudely demanding you look?

Mr Regular himself says otherwise.

BMW 8 Series immediately comes to mind.

BTW I have to ask: Was the plate-blurring in the video at the request of you or Mr. Regular?

The E38 7-series. There’s a reason why it and the E39 are regarded as “peak BMW"

911 Turbo S Cabriolet in white or silver. Everyone just assumes you’re the car that’s $150,000 cheaper.

Lexus LS400

Extremely refined and comfortable, and outclassed the S-Class of it’s day, yet looks like... A car.

The e38 bmw. It’s just timeless and sexy at the same time without looking too flashy.

I like to think the new S-class coupe is understated. No questioning that it’s elegant.

The Lincoln Continental from the 1960s had it:

The Mercedes Benz W116 S-Class

Kinja'd!!!

It’s the top of the line Mercedes with all the accoutrements and the option for a 6.9 engine, and yet it looks as utilitarian and almost pedestrian as the other cars in the line up.

I ultimately requested it to try and keep the vanity-plate haters at bay.

Interesting. I say if it’s a car that someone would ask what it is, the vanity plate is good. So yours is fine.

Nah, owners don’t make the car. Just because an AMG owner claims to own one, doesn’t mean it’s a bad car. There are plenty of assholes that drive all types of cars.

Two that immediately come to mind:

De-chromed and de-badged, preferably. Nothing terribly ostentatious, just clean designs that won’t arouse too much suspicion.

One last favorite:

I still think that the W126 can still rate as one of the all time greats.
