Right now, the Kinja commenting system is as such:

Commenter A: Comment

Commenter B: Reply to Commenter A

Commenter A: Reply to Commenter B

Commenter C: Reply to Commenter A

But wait: If context clues don’t help, how do you know which of Commenter A’s comments did Commenter C reply to?

I think it should be like Reddit: each reply creates a sub-menu under any given commenter, separated by thin vertical bars

Commenter A: Comment

—>Commenter B: Reply to Commenter A

——> Commenter A: Reply to Commenter B

—> Commenter C: Reply to Commenter A

Here you know that C replied to A’s original comment, not his reply to B

The only drawback : If it's just an ongoing conversation between two people, the bars will continue to push it far over to the right, thus restricting horizontal space to write.

On the one hand, good. On the other, this could be served by adding a “replied to your comment xyz” tag to the reply.

And finally, Kinja has enough issues. Let them fix those first.

If there is just a conversation between 2 people and it’s so long that the indents go all the way to the right, that thread should just be collapsed like it is now. To see all the comments you’d have to click the “Show more replies in this thread” button.

I’d rather it have a first-8-character (or so, not much is needed) quote at the top of the reply automatically embedded. Saves horizontal space, adds minimal vertical space.
