Lapping is fun, even in a (relatively) slow car

This past Friday I took part in a lapping evening with 1morelap.ca, at Calabogie Motorsports Park. Compared to another event I did earlier with the Motorsports Club of Ottawa, it had a far more serious crowd, with lots of drivers swapping tires in the paddock. There were a few E46 M3s, an Aston, GTR, TT on slicks and a couple Toyobarus. Me and my 170 hp Golf tried not to hold up the field too much, as the only other vehicles with less than 200 hp were stripped and caged Civic Chumpcars.

Regardless, it was a fun evening and I look forward to returning again with proper tires and brake pads. My car handled it well, but it’s pretty clear that the only way to push any harder is to do some upgrades.

I plugged in my GoPro for all of the sessions, Tavarish style. It’s interesting that speed looks completely different on video (much, much slower).

Is that some sort of double-suction-cup mount? How is that even necessary? Just one of those is strong enough to pull dents out with.

Also yeah, it’s the wide angle. Makes distances appear greater and speeds slower. When I’ve used them to film friends on the slopes, I have to practically be touching them with the camera pole to make it look like I’m nearby.

I bought it when I read this article so the one I ended up buying is meant for DSLRs (which I’ve used before). It looks comically oversized with the GoPro, but the extra length of the arm puts it in a nice spot.

Ah, that would make sense then.

Please tell me you got eyes on the Multimatic facility. Please please please.

I wish I had something fun to track on weekends, but I guess spending a few hours shooting the Italian Car Day stuff isn’t too bad of a compromise. :P

I’ve never actually gone to Ottawa’s Italian festival, I should try that.

As for Multimatic, I saw the GT testing video but besides a few sponsorship signs, I didn’t see any new buildings or facilities.

Darn, they must have hidden it really well haha.

I should try the Ottawa one as well, but its a 4 hour drive from Toronto :P I was at the one in Vaughan

Seeing as this car is your daily, what kind of effects on the tires and brakes are you seeing? I’m trying to fight the urge to track day my stock mazda 3 because I don’t really want to change wear items before 30k miles

I’m currently running stock pads and tires (all-season) and have had maybe 5 hours of actual track time this season on them. So far I’ve been pleased that wear is relatively minimal: I’m only down a few mm on the brake pads and tires are at about half tread. I wanted this season to test the waters but I anticipate that next spring I’ll be moving to summer tires and a more street/track oriented pad (the largest problem so far was cooking the pads when I was really pushing).

Ahh so a single track day wouldn’t be too crazy then. Thanks for the info

It’s just a small shop near the entrance.
