It didnt turn out very awesome.
As it turns out painters tape doesnt stick to rust very well. So, it looks not that great. Will some paint thinner and a steady hand fix this for the most part?

Paint thinner might work, but you may as well just sand it down and try again. If you need some help, I’m free after 3 today.

Did you use oil based paint? I am in the sign and display union, we use lacquer thinner for all our hand touch ups. With masking its best to paint it and only wait a few minutes before you pull the tape, then touch it up while it’s still a bit wet. I would have hand painted it, but I have more practice.

If you havent already noticed its amateur hour here with this one. I just used a spray can of gloss white, and taped it up a ton. My guess is put it on too thick and it made it through the layers. And to be honest I didnt hand paint it because I assumed I would leave noticeable brush strokes, also not sure if I have the skill level to do it either.

I actually like it like that. It looks like the paint has sort of aged with the rest of the piece. I completely understand if you don’t, but to my eyes it’s a happy accident that I would press on with.
To fix it though, I would start with your idea of paint thinner and a steady hand and if it doesn’t work out, just go over it all with thinner and try again.

If you spray and the surface is crinkly, I would do very light layers and wait a few minutes between shots. It will bleed for sure if the paint isn’t mixed really well and it goes on heavy. You can also use wax sticks to mask in areas that tape will miss. I missed the first part of this, you wanted to keep it rusty? Is this for a table? Wall hanging? Shooting it with a flat clear to seal it up would help, then paint the letters, it would change the finish a bit but if it was a table it would clean up easier after your drunken spills (sorry if I’m assuming that would happen).

The plan is to build a table out of it. And yeah, I only wanted to repaint just the raised letters and leave the rest of it as is, figured it would keep it mostly authentic but also make it so the letters could pop again. And I figured the best time to clear it would be after I painted the letters, but now that you mention it makes sense.
And the drunken spills is a fair point since it is probably going to be a liquor table of sorts.

I don’t honestly think that looks all that bad in my opinion.
