I seem to have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well alright, who am I kidding? Don’t we all? It’s a formula that proves to be flawless. It’s a driver’s car that doubles as a doer’s car. It’ll carry your small furniture, haul your kids to school, round up all your gear for a road trip and still draw a crowd at a car meet. It’s the Swiss — or in this case — German army knife of automobiles.

So then what if you take all that and further the ideology? What if the notion of a do-it-all wagon with the road manners of a true driver’s car still just seems too pedestrian?

Enter Juliann’s BMW E46 3-series Touring. From afar, it may look unassuming until you realize up close it’s no standard E46 wagon at all.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, that’s a BMW S54. Juliann purchased this wagon with the keen understanding this car is essentially a E46 M3 with a bit of extra cargo space. And for the unaware, BMW never actually green-lighted a E46 M3 Touring for production. Once again, we bid grace to the car gods for the concept of an engine swap.

Kinja'd!!!

What would you do with what is essentially an M3 wagon? Sure you could hustle a few eager stoplight racers. You could confuse the master techs at a BMW dealership and arouse the unsuspecting at a BMW meet. As for Juliann however, she has made it a point to use the car exactly as a wagon is capable of being used. Juliann rescues dogs with her E46.

Kinja'd!!!

Juliann initially had only intended to save two surviving boxers from a litter. Before long however, she found herself saving dogs from high kill shelters by transporting dogs across Texas to various foster homes. Additionally, Juliann pairs dogs with fosters and provides mentoring opportunities to those who are interested in fostering dogs for the first time.

Kinja'd!!!

There are those who may wince at the sight of dog paws on the seats of an enthusiast’s car, but to Juliann her E46 serves a function. It is not a garage queen or a show car. It is not the puzzle piece of a collector and it does not serve to appease the perfectionist. Juliann’s E46 is the performance wagon BMW hoped people would understand. It’s everything you need and then, in the case with this particular car, a little extra of what we would all want.

Kinja'd!!!

At week’s end Juliann proves that her car is every bit of a driver’s car on the track. Being a E46, it receives most aftermarket parts from the sedans all the same. Slapping a coilover system and big brake kit on enables the car to rotate around corners faster than any vehicle of utility has a right to. Of course, the true value of the car is that it renders fellow racers little knowledge of what it actually accomplishes off the track.

Kinja'd!!!

Long live the wagon.

Friend had one of these (though he had a Rottweiler and she only get sat in the boot area). Great car, happy to sit at 120mph all day (only only did for about 40minutes because speed cameras (I wasn’t driving), hit the accelerator at she’d be doing 70mph in the blink of an eye. He’s got an clean unmolested E46 M3 coupe now.

But, the dogs sitting in the interior and their paws scratching the paint drive me nuts. Ugh.

Too bad it doesnt have the M3 front end swap. I realize its more than just swapping panels as the fenders require some cutting and welding between coupes and 4 doors but it isnt an impossible task.

I love BMW wagons, particularly the E34. The only thing I don't love about that particular version is the dual sunroof which is terribly prone to leakage, and has far more relays and fuses than necessary to make it operate correctly. Beyond that, BMW wagons are some of the best driving do-it-all cars out there.

To be honest, I never really liked the way the M3 looked from the front, I much prefer the regular facelifted E46 look. That S54 powered wagon is damn near perfect.

Kinja'd!!! OneTyreFyer > newton
04/30/2018 at 16:05

Kinja'd!!!0

So, they say ~80% of the parts on the M3 are not on regular ‘3er. Once of the things I learned owning an M3 and reading service manuals / bentley manuals for example, is that there are a bunch of gussets and reinforcements on the M that aren’t on a ‘3. So, simply throwing an S54 into an E46 touring does not make an M3. But unless you’re on a track I’m sure the differences are trivial.
