Kinja'd!!!

I mentioned last week that I would pay someone $50 if they could walk me through getting Windows 10 off my machine and get me back to Windows 8. A heroic reader here managed to do it for me (although he asked if I would pay him in books, which I did). Windows 10 is now asking if I’d like to go through that all again.

I installed Windows 10 and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! My computer was lagging, as if Windows 10 was hogging all of the resources. A few other things were odd so I figured I’d go in and play with a few settings. That’s when I discovered that I could not access the Settings or the Control Panel. And when I clicked on the “Return to Windows 8” nothing happened.

It turns out that if you hit Shift + Start at the same time, you will find a few options, one of which will allow you to Return to Previous Build or some such and after an hour or so of tinkering with it, I was back to where I wanted to be.

And this morning I saw the pop up inviting me to the wonders of the Windows 10 Hellscape. Um, No thanks.

But I still managed to record my podcast and video cast last week, despite the brouhaha. Here is the audio.

And the video.

The topic is a favorite of mine in that it always starts arguments here. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I’ve had no such issues going from 7 to 10

It’s been working fine for me as well. Granted, I do almost nothing but surf the web and listen to music with my home computer.

I went from 7 to 10 and my computer was reduced to a crawl but I went into the device manager and updated EVERYTHING and now it is glorious. If I only I could work out to set up a guest profile, I would be set.

Device Manager? One of the things it wouldn’t let me access.

My Dad upgraded his and Moms computers. Moms is working great, better than ever. His however. There are issues. I’m going to check it out tomorrow and promptly recommend he get a new machine. It’s over 10 years old for cripe sake.

I’m on Linux so no upgrades for me..

I did the same thing on my relatively new desktop. Had some really frustrating issues on Windows 10 so just went back to 8.1 and it’s running great. Still getting the Windows 10 updates but I’m just turning them down. Hopefully the next time I update will have some bugs worked out.

I had luck with Windows 10, I guess. 15 minutes all around o update, download and install, and once it was done my PC might as well have been on meth by how much faster it ran. Haven’t had any problems with it, other than that I haven’t seen my bootup and welcome screens in a long time :p

Sorry you’re having issues, Steve.

I was lucky. I had a Windows 7 laptop that died about a year ago - it would boot, then BSOD anywhere from 5 seconds to 5 hours later. The message returned was about NETWINS64.dll, if I recall correctly.

All efforts to replace that file were unsuccessful. I just couldn’t fix the blasted thing.

Then a couple weeks ago, I upgraded it to Win10... and amazingly, it didn’t BSOD during the install.

It’s been up and stable for up to three days at a time, though, with no unexpected reboots or BSOD’s. For me, then, Windows10 resurrected my laptop, and I’m very happy with that.

For the most part, the Windows 10 upgrade really depends on the age of the machine being upgraded.

If it’s a new machine, it runs the risk of either being fully-complaint because the OEM is on top of things, or it’ll be missing those newer drivers and fall back to generic ones, if available.

If it’s a couple years old, it’s likely it’ll be supported and work fine.

If it’s an older machine (think 6+ years old) then it probably will lag a bit, especially the first few hours of use while it “gets it’s bearings”

What also affects it is if it’s a lower-spec machine.

I’ve upgraded 4 machines so far, and had few problems aside from a minor bug or two mostly on my gaming tower because of AMD’s graphics drivers lagging. My 4 year old Dell Latitude laptop, my parents’ 3 year old custom built tower, and their 3 year old Toshiba laptop, all took the upgrade fine.

My machine is just a tad over a year old. Middle aged in computer years.

What brand/model computer? A year old should have been more than fine, even on a lower-spec Pentium model.

It’s a Dell. Not on it now but its decent. I’ll just wait til they debug W10. I heard from many others who had issues.

That’s surprising, Dell support is usually pretty good about that. Oh well. Give it about 6 months and it should be good for another try.

Dell support? Why call them? It wasn’t their problem.

No, sorry I don’t mean Dell Support as in their support team, I mean their software support. Meaning they are usually pretty good about updates and such.
