It can’t be reached from the driver seat unless you’re a knuckle dragging ape.

Lolz. The extra wiring to mount that actually within reach of humans would have added at most several grams to the car. A really satisfying burp probably weighs more.

That is the most goddamned retarded design decision I’ve ever seen. There is 0% reason to put that there. Easy access to power and a small heat source is, like, the whole bloody point of having that device in the car at all.

The answer is not Miata this time.

The sad part is that not many people charge via 12v nowadays. It’s all USB based.

That... that is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a while. That wiring adds a lot of weight I guess.

My phone charger is USB. I have a dongle that plugs into the 12v outlet in the Camry. Dashcams are hardwired now.

I’m sure this is for Grandpa when he needs a plug for his Jitterbug.

Yeah. 12v sockets just aren’t relevant anymore. Maybe it’s there for the tire inflator kit?

.....you nailed it. I didn’t even think to look but YUP. The compressor has an old school 12v socket plug on it.

So now we know why it is obscured, but still there - it’s for very occasional use only.

Perfect for dash cams

My dashcam is plugged into a 12V socket. I actually wouldn’t mind it being plugged into a more discreet location. It’s kind of obnoxious where it is. Maybe instead of using a socket at all, I should just hard-wire it in...

BMW E9x’s of some years have one in a similar location. Mine has a delete due to them deleting it in newer years for costs reasons. I bet 99.9% of the owners don't know it exist.

I've thought about hard wiring mine before. I had the wire tucked away for a while but it fell out since I didn't use anything to keep it in place other than the snugness of the headliner. Just hangs now
