What does Oppo think of a 1985 inline 5 turbo diesel Mercedes 300sd?

Anything I should watch for when looking for one to buy?

Vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks everywhere.

How do you check for that?

Well, one of the indications of comedy vacuum leaks everywhere would be if the engine takes a second or two to turn off. The fuel cutoff valve depends on vacuum. Another would be if the door locks don’t work after a little while sitting. Another would be loud hissing noises (no, really). One of the places you get vacuum leaks is in the diaphragms that actuate things in the A/C system, so running the A/C system through its paces (making sure it blows cold, blows through the right selected vents) would be the test for that.

There's a channel in YouTube called Mercedessource. The guy gives some sound advice especially on Mercedes Diesels.

Other things I’ve thought of to check for: rust behind the rear wheel and over the wheel arch (mostly a W123 thing, but worth keeping an eye out), splits in the seats, and oil leaks. One of the ones that’s a giant pain is the oil drain tube from the turbo to the oil pan. If that looks like it’s been spewing, you’re in for one of the most irritating jobs to install $5 in parts that you can imagine. Also, motor mounts may be iffy at this point.

I hope you don’t mind taking longer to do the 1/4 mile than the lines at Disney World do.

‘Struth. Always appreciated the irony of major vacuum problems on a diesel.
