Gorgeous angry car for your time. Not my picture
It’s been exactly one year since I got divorced, and the repercussions won’t end. I moved away, half way across the country to pay for her med school and this is how it ended. One year into the move, we split (there goes 5 years.. oh well). Now I’m left on my own to pay for the car which was supposed to be paid for by two incomes, which I’ve been able to manage. Insurance hadn’t changed as the house and the other car were still in the policy, but today the change was made official - but not reflected yet. With my current living situation, I’m paying as much for rent as I do for my car, and that leaves me little money to play with, but I don’t have many expenses. I’m not huge on going out a lot so I spend little.
In Sept I’ll be moving to a cheaper place, and an all-together happier place since I’ll be rooming with a person I actually get along with. Rent will be about $200 less, so that is going to help a LOT. But the news today of how my insurance is going to change is pretty devastating. Due to my age group, being un-married and having a sports car, but losing multi-car discount along with the house insurance discount the policy will go up about $400(max) per semester. :/ wtf? I have 0 incidents at fault, 0 speeding tickets, 0 moving violations, nothing in the record, nada, zero. I drive the car less than 600 miles a year bc I just live so close to work I don’t always drive. And the total amount per SEMESTER is nearing up $1022 at best case scenario. For one car. Sure it’s good some increased coverages, but when you’re around cars its easy to rack up the bill by hitting the wrong car. And it only takes one. I had left my good student discount from my college days, and have a good driver discount. Gah..
I was already wanting to change my car for something cheap but from when I got rear-ended by that M5, I went under on the car. Yipee. So now I’m not even able to trade it for something worth 20k or so but no bank wants to play dice. I guess I should have expected this... I just wish it hadn’t been now. It’s been a rough year at work with constant 70+ hour weeks, few vacation days and not the best pay bc my last manager dicked me over. If this year I can’t get a raise, I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep the car, or shouldn’t. I know eventually I will be able to figure something out, save enough and trade it for like a corolla or something super cheap. It’s just.. after so many hard-working years of making progress.. now I have to take a huge leap back again. Except now I got no family around. Blah... I just want a rock to hide under. Or to throw at someone.
Rant over.. has anyone here actually had any experience with the insurance programs that put an OBDII style reader in your car to determine your driving style/characteristics? My insurance lady being very nice suggested I look into it as I drive so little per year. While I’m not necessarily concerned with my driving style since I drive decent for the most part, I’m just concerned that if I ever want to go back to the track or just drive slightly spiritedly between the first two gears as one sometimes does after a bad day at work - that my insurance is just going to skyrocket. I also have heard if you remove the device they will raise it as much as they want since you’re breaking the contract or something or other. I’ve heard of people challenging that with the exuse that it loosened up with some results, but I just don’t know if its worth taking that chance or how often it really works.. I mean come on, I’m sure insurance companies know sports car owners don’t want to take their car on bad surfaces, but one could argue its just the stiff suspension.. I don’t know. I’m really just thinking out loud now. Thinking solutions... not problems. Thoughts?

Have you shopped the insurance around at all? You may be able to find slightly lower rates with someone else.

Aye. Now with the updated policy tho, they might be closer to a better price than I initially thought.

I am also frustrated by insurance companies. When I moved across the country, I sold off my old car (that I hadn’t driven in 2+ years) and bought a new one. I was unemployed and couldn’t afford insurance, taxes and registration, hence the reason I parked the car and didn’t drive it.
Well, after moving I find out that my rates are going to be rather high because I admitted that I didn’t have insurance prior to starting this new policy. Of course I didn’t have insurance - I WASN’T DRIVING! That doesn’t seem to matter to them, and therefore I pay more for insurance for a basic minivan than a co-worker was paying for a much faster, much sportier vehicle, even though I have a spotless record and he’s got multiple tickets. Sometimes, it seems, that life comes back to bite you in the ass even when you do the right thing.

They seem to be just interested in making money, not actually providing coverage for us when we need it. Bc when we do, they charge us even more.
You’re right, sometimes doing the right thing will in fact suck more, but that’s why not everyone does it. If it was easier or the same I guess everyone would do it.

It sounds like you have the divorce worked out, but if you have questions. My wife would be happy to answer them.

I actually raised the question of removing it if I got stuck in the winter, so the inevitable spinning as I was getting out wouldn’t mess up my score. I was told to go ahead, just to plug it back in again as soon as possible.
