I still love the idea of a 4-door hatchback executive saloon.

But an expensive car that is also practical wouldn’t sell.

In their own uniquely French way, yes.

Yes, there were the Citroen XM and subsequent Renaults like the Vel Satis as well, but buyers stayed away.

There’s still the BMW 5GT of course...

The 5Gt is kind of the same idea, but it’s not really a hatchback. It’s almost an anti-hatchback. People just think cheap when they see a hatchback. I guess when you’ve got some money you don’t need convenience.

I never understood Americas hatred toward large, practical hatchback saloons. The ultra utilitious Merkur Scorpio(I owned two) failed miserably here, as too the sleek Sterling 827SLi and the Saab 9000.

Don’t forget the last gen Skoda Superb, while technically not a hatchback it was available with this wierd ass trunk that could be open as a hatch. And hte Opel Insigna which is available is both 4 and 5 doors flavours.

It’s not just America, europeans don’t really like large Hatchback sedans either. Renault was the most persitent with the idea, having basically invented the genre back in the 60s, but each of their efforts after the R16 was less successful than the previous model and Renault eventually dropped the large hatchback sedan as well.

I don, t feel like the 9000 failed. There were a fair number on the roads when they were in production.

It was a good car but by no means a runaway sales leader. lots more should've sold. Oddly the 9000 that I liked and owned was the CDE sedan version. Didn't like the weird black trim around the hatch windows on those

Oddly I disagree with you and I hate wagons. And hatches. And Saabs.
