As much as you’re willing to spend on a track car.
At the very least all you need to do is make sure it’s got good tires, new brake pads, and better fluid. Few hundred bucks to just over a grand.

Precisely the amount of monies that link contains, or $2400 for the link-averse.

Depends on how hardcore of a track machine you want and how comfortable of a daily driver you want. I know people that have tracked straight-up street cars with zero modifications. Likewise you can sink 10’s of thousands of dollars into making the ultimate track machine and have it street legal, meaning it *can* be driven on the street, though whether or not you should is a different matter.

Should I bother beefing up the engine and putting some gears in the rear?

The other question is, which I forgot to ask, what do you mean by “track” car? Are you planning to AutoX, RallyX, SCCA Solo, NASA, etc.? Is there a specific class you want to compete in? Because that will largely determine your budget.
Or do you just want to build a hot street car that you can take to open track days where you’re not really competing, you’re just out there with everyone else?

Yes, they make kits for all the Fox chassied cars forward.

You’d probably be better off buying the brand new Boss 302.

While I think it would be amazing to compete I don’t think I could manage that. I was looking for more like open track days to go with a buddy of mine who has a 2013 Super Snake and do like backroad runs and such. Though I really do want to race in a sanctioned series sometime.

http://www.maximummotorsports.com/1990-93-Mustan… actually there is a kit for the 90-93, it’s the same price.

Well if you want to build a track car out of a Foxbody that will match it in performance and DD ability, as well as having the necessary features for such a fast track car (particularly one that’s so old), you’re like looking at a build close to the same price.
In what way do you want it to be like the BOSS 302? You could build a pretty nice Foxbody track car with a cage for probably around $10-15k, but I doubt it’d be much like a BOSS 302.
You could also go cheaper and have a decent daily car that can handle some track days throughout the year for around $5,000 to $10,000. You don’t need much to have a fun track car. Tires, brake pads, some stainless brake lines, maybe new rotors and some Koni Yellows. Perhaps new springs and a sway bar or two. I’d likely do bushings on a car that old too.

The problem with most mustangs is you are going to spend more making it handle well than you will on the actual car. I bought a ‘98 Gt with the intentions of turning it into a track car. I bought an SN95 because of a few factors: 1) it was the previous generation, which means people were parting them out left and right to sell their cars and buy SN197’s and 2) they were cheaper to build than Fox’s. Sure foxes can be lighter, but after the hub swaps and all that junk it was cheaper to start an SN95.
I suggest you figure out what you want out of this car. Sure a set of coilovers will make the car feel better, but if you want the K member and the nicer steering racks, and all that Jazz you are going to be spending some serious money to make a mustang handle as well as a bmw.
I’ve also driven a full blown race mustang and my god did it handle well. But I also learned to “ride the slide” as the rear was still prone to get very numb and then break away. It was super progressive... just weird.

I’m not talking about like making this thing a stripper and then modding the piss out of it, but keep it relatively stock and just make the suspension and bits good and some nice racing seats.

Just fork of the cash and start with this:

t
he dude does have 20k into that car... all you need is a nice set of coilovers and an alignment and you’d be good to go. You can finance them by selling the NOS kit.

That’s more what I figured. Tires, brake stuff mentioned above, seat(s), a harness bar, 5 point belts, new bushings, a sway bar or two, Koni Yellows and some springs would do the trick. That’s probably around $3-4k in total if you look for deals. That would make for a pretty nice little track/DD.
You can also go the coilover route, just don’t go cheap on them. I wouldn’t run anything less than a KW V3 or Ohlins R&T quality coilover. You’re closer to around $5k then.

I’ve driven Mustang’s sense I got my permit I know about them well and I was just going to get a nice suspension kit, some racing seats, 5 lug swap it, and maybe a partial roll cage. I just need something to get my feet wet in before I go full bore on something in the future.

That’d make for a great car. Don’t forget the harness bar for the seatbelt too. You can also probably find a nice bucket seat used for about half as much as the brand new one.

True, Those are just new things I have found. I just want something like that I can throw about and not worry because There are so many foxes out there if it breaks I can fix it cheap enough.

The Fox Body is that great of a versatile car. Hell Vaughn Gittin Jr started drifting in one. Also the Fox Before the Fox was the Mustang II. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A MUSTANG II DRAG CAR WITH A BIG BLOCK!?

Gears, maybe, although the 3.35s should do the trick you could probably stand to do 3.73s. I wouldn’t touch the engine, a Fox with a solid suspension setup will outgrip your talent and motor for a good while.

I don’t quite know why they specify between the two, the differences are so completely minimal between the two (literally almost zero), but clearly they know something I don’t!
