Having finished the Crane last week, it was only fair to crack on with the big fella, all 2700ish pieces of it.

Really fun build with lots of cool little features, but hey, you didn’t come here for words, you came for pictures didn’t you:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Pneumatics control the crane, everything else is mechanically controlled.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh and because its a truck the cab lifts off of course.

Kinja'd!!!

Large, confusing gearbox does many things.

Kinja'd!!!

Each wheel is independently sprung.

Kinja'd!!!

4 Wheel steering, naturally.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Its a big old model, weighing in at about 4.5kg.

Kinja'd!!!

The rear driveline is articulated so drive is still transmitted when the rear wheels are at maximum suspension travel.

Kinja'd!!!

Nestled in the gearbox is a little pneumatic pump which is controlled by the same motor as all the other functions. Lego is nothing if not efficient.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The crane is slightly unwieldy, but I’d go with operator error/idiocy...

I’m sitting here going over my Lego Robotics class and trying to picture any of the kids here trying to build that...

It’s totally awesome and I’m jelly

Ha yeah it stumped me more than once. I know I wouldn’t have been able to do this at 11 which I think is the minimum age.

I have enough Technic pieces, I could probably build a truck thing.

these kids are 8-9 and are having trouble with a simple drag car...they’d look at this truck and go ‘Dafaq?”

Is that an inline engine? I’ve never seen a Lego set with an inline before, all of mine are either Vee or Flat...

Inline 6 yeah. Same design and parts as normal, but cleverly designed as always so fits as an I6

you totally should. The instructions will be online im sure, and as its lego, you can always go off book.

What sets do you have?

The ones with engines, I presume you mean...

Kinja'd!!!

H4 - 8860 - One of my dad’s old sets that he gave to me

Kinja'd!!!

V4 - 8048 - Actually my brother’s since my parents are trying to interest him in Technic...

Kinja'd!!!

1 Cyl - 8256 - My first Technic with an engine...

Kinja'd!!!

V6 - 42022 -1 - Bought Christmas shopping with grandparents last year.

Kinja'd!!!

V4 - 9395 - 1 - Received for Christmas two years ago

Kinja'd!!!

V8 - 8041 - Not sure of circumstances when I got it, but I disassembled the engine and it lay in pieces for nearly 6 months before I rebuilt it...sounds like real project cars...

Kinja'd!!!

V8 - 8070 - Received last Christmas-my most complex set yet!

I think I have about three or four more without engines that I’m currently too lazy to go find...

Jealous of the 8860! I have all of it’s direct successors.

Kinja'd!!!

The 8865 - V4

Kinja'd!!!

The 8880 - V8 four speed transmission 4WD and 4 wheel steer!

Kinja'd!!!

The 8448 - V8 Sadly I only got the parts for the convertible in mine...

Kinja'd!!!

And the 8070 which as you know has a V8 :-)

I also have the Unimog

Kinja'd!!!

I4. The steering is complete rubbish, and so is the front suspension geometry! But the claw is awesome.

Still in the process of building the 8860 actually, as it seems to be missing several parts which we keep having to order...jealous of the ‘Mog, that is the most awesome Technic IMHO...8880 seems pretty cool as well, and I’ve seen it in our storage room so perhaps I’ll get free reign of that after 8860 is finally complete...and what do you mean by the convertible version of 8448? Does it actually have a folding roof? If so, that seems cooler than a non-convertible...

Does the 8860 have the old technic pin design as well? The 8865 does and they are a PAIN to deal with. I replaced them all with modern ones, but I had to take it apart to do so... It was not easy. While the Unimog is pretty neat, it could have been better. The steering is nearly impossible to use.... Definitely try and build the 8880! It’s pretty neat, though it has the ride height of a truck, but I guess to pack all of the features in design came second.

Yeah. It has a folding hard top powered. To bring it up it’s actually powered by an airshock (?), but putting it down is manual. The doors were gullwing style to I thought that might be cool.

It seems all the pins in 8860 are the modern style as I see no difference between its pins and that of say 8041...in terms of large scale sets, maybe the Arcos will succeed where the ‘Mog failed, though I want to have both in my collection someday...the folding top seems really awesome and I personally think its cooler than having just gullwings...its kind of like an SLS in that manner, where you have to choose between gullwing and convertible...
