Recommend a good cutting compound for getting more shine out of new paint? The colour matches and is smooth but after two coats of clear and wet sanding the finish still doesn’t have a good shine. I expect to have to do more clear but was hoping putting in some elbow grease with cutting compound would help.

m105 makes a ton of dust, i like menzerna fast gloss 400 for compound followed by their sf 4000, wipe down with a mix of alcohol and water after because it is a bit oily, the use your favorite sealant.

M105 like others have said but if you have trouble finding it OTC you can always use Ultimate Compound from Megs. Its more user friendly, no fillers, and cuts pretty well as well. Almost every Autozone, Advance carries it. I also have heard great things about FG400 from Menz and how well it finishes.

Hi fella. What polish do you have? Ideally you need to go to the highest grade you have of wet sanding, then hit with a heavy compound, then a regular polish with a cutting (firm) pad then use a soft finishing pad. If you have a regular polish and not any ultrafine finishing polish like 3M Ultrafine SE or Meguiars Ultra Fine Finishing polish (or similar), use the softest pad you have and you’ll be grand. Alternatively you can use the softest pad you have, initially at one third full rpm, then go to half full rpm and then a little higher (this is jeweling), this will increase the temperature of the panel your working on and best done with a rotary polisher.

Right now I have nothing other than the standard Autoglym polish I apply after a clean. I’m thinking of investing in a polisher and some pads along with compounds and polishes. I’ve been using 1500 grit sandpaper between clear coats. Since you and a few others have recommended the Meguairs I might invest in one of their cutting compound and finisher packs.

Thanks!

Meguiars sell packs with both compound and finisher so I think I might get that since so many people think it's good stuff.

Ultimate Finish have some good kits available.

Do you have any higher grade grit like 2,000 or 3,000? 1,000 and 1,500 are good for keying and starting but best to follow up with something finer and then go onto compounds and finally polishes.

Honestly I thought 1500 would be fine enough, I’ll pick up some finer stuff today. Then I think I’ll see which of the products you recommended are going for a good price right now (I’m not exactly well off haha) and invest in a polisher. There's one on amazon for £35 that looks fairly reasonable.

If your polishing by hand it’s easier on your body to go 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, cutting compound, polish and then finishing polish.

A polisher will help and get good results from post 1500 grit.

Do you have any Gtechniq P1 polish? Not sure if I included any when I sent some Gtechniq stuff. It’s a great all in one polish which is pad dependant which means you can cut through to finish and is water based so no oils, just wipe off and your done.

I went 600-800-1200-1500 in the prep process then 1500 between coats. I think I’ll pick up some 2000 and 2500 then look into getting a polisher. I have wanted a proper polisher for some time.

I think it was 4muddyfeet you sent the pack to, but I don’t have anything like that. I found a good deal on some Meguiars compound and finisher on amazon so I’m thinking about that.

Sorry. I always mix to two of you up. My bad.

Even a sander with a backing plate and pads will do it, though a sander uses higher rpms. If you go that route use the lower half of the speed settings unless jeweling.

No problem haha.

I don’t even have a sander so it makes sense to just get a polisher. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it.
