Toshiba Satellite whatever #, wasn’t even a school year old. Screen went dead, shut it down and now it’s forever stuck on the start-up screen. That’s the last POS Toshiba I will ever buy in my life and this time I won’t let the floor salesperson convince me otherwise. I think for my next one I’ll just buy a used Thinkpad or Lenovo like the last time Oppo suggested.

I am so sick and tired of substandard equipment - Toshibas that have perpetual screen issues and won’t last a full calendar year, DLink wireless routers that have an arm’s length’s worth of range, etc. I guess from now on I’ll either buy decent brand names used or proverbially work extra overtime to actually afford good stuff. Remember, those blank buttons just remind you that you should’ve worked harder. Cheap brands will just force you to work harder for better equipment in the end. In the meantime, know of a good place to buy used laptops and routers?

If you want to revive that laptop and make it useful again, you can try and install Ubuntu or Linux Mint on it. It will make it run like new (actually better cause you won't have Windows on it).

May get some shit for this, but if you have the money, buy a Macbook. I LOVE Windows and Apple. Both have treated me very well, but Apple makes some solid laptops.

I’ve had my Macbook Pro since 2010 and it’s a tank (knock on wood). Their OS may not always be the best, but with in my experiences, the hardware holds up strong for a looooooong time.

Acer just annouced a $170 Win10 laptop. It’s like a Chromebook, but it runs Win10.

You get what you pay for mostly. Just reinstall on a new HD if that’s the case.

Yeah, if you can’t repair the laptop, Lenovo Outlet often has great deals on refurbs and scratch and dent units:

I’d rather have Windows, but you are right that if it gets to loading screen, there’s a decent chance it is salvageable. A bootable USB with Linux would be a quick and easy test, and if it works he can get his stuff off and install whatever OS works best.

At the very least, take the hard drive out and use it as an external drive. Honestly, most of the laptop is probably salvageable and you could even replace the screen for cheap. I’ve repaired my laptops on multiple occasions like this, most of them HPs because they give you easy access to the motherboard.

Also, check the warranty since it’s so new. You might get a free replacement.

If you want something that is solid hardware wise, look for a Lenovo. They have probably the best hardware design of any laptop out there, and going with a macbook isn’t going to be an improvement.

$300 is about what a new, solid, capable laptop (that isn’t going to be very good mind you, no gaming or photoshop) should cost you. $500 is what a good one that can last 2-4 years will run.

I can’t recommend this enough. Lenovo’s aren’t particularly powerful, but their build quality is exceptional for their price point. They’re the volvo of laptops.

Yep. I’m currently using an Asus Zenbook Prime, and while it was excellent value for the money, its build quality is pretty appalling compared with my old Thinkpad. The only bad thing I’ve got to say about the current Thinkpads (beyond price) is that Lenovo has been one of the worst manufactures in terms of adopting high-resolution screens.

Less than a year old, so get it repaired free under warranty, sell it, and get something better. Lately I’m liking Lenovo (minus the built-in spyware in non-ThinkPads), Asus, Acer, and Dell. HP can, as usual, suck it. Razer’s not bad but a bit pricey for what you get, but a better value than an Alienware.

Just don’t get a crapple. Literally the same components with an extra $300-500 tacked on (at least) just for a glowy logo and software that’s older than Windows XP. I’ve seen nothing but problems with them as late, but because of applecare and trying to uphold a reputation, “geniuses” will do what they can to force you into replacing the defective product with a newer model. Even my FIL, who is a hardcore apple lover, has admitted he's on his last MBP if I'll build him a hackintosh.

This is what warranties are for. The reason they make shit laptops is because people don’t claim warranty on them.

Forever stuck on the POST screen? (The Toshiba logo) or forever stuck on the Windows loading screen?

I highly recommend a MacBook Pro. I’ve got a mid 2010 15” MacBook Pro with an i7 processor. Bought it new and it hasn’t skipped a beat since then. Swapped the optical drive for an SSD (so I have two hard drives now) last year for the performance boost and added storage. I honestly can’t see myself replacing this computer for another two or three years. It still runs smooth and I get about 4 hours from the battery. However, when I do upgrade, I think I’ll either buy used from Ebay or refurbished from Apple. If you need Windows you can always install it, I did it for Matlab and Autocad in college with no issues.
