“It’s this insistence on perfection in all things big and small that gives the CX-3 the win; its maker’s sixth straight comparison-test victory . We’re witnessing the birth of a new dominant species all right—not necessarily the subcompact crossover, but Mazda.”
Love it.

Woo. Now if only people will test drive them and buy them instead of going “eh, let’s just get another Honda/Toyota"

Standard Juke, sure, but RS, not a chance.

Isn’t this just a Mazda3 with some body cladding and lifted suspension for like 3k more? People who buy these things instead of the cheaper, better car version is just dumb.

Yeah, I was going to add a comment like that. Hopefully they'll keep gaining market share and really break through before long.

And you can have a manual with the 3!

It's actually based on the new mazda 2, not the 3, but it's why I picked a mazda dealership to work for!

Wait what? There is a new 2 coming out?

Not in America, too much overlap with the FWD CX-3, and the last 2 didn't sell great. The new skyactiv 2 is federalized for sale in Puerto Rico, so they can sell it here at any time if they decide there's a business case for it.

I’ve been really digging Mazda’s design language since they debuted their Kodo theme, but this thing is just awkward looking. Definitely the ugly duckling in a family of class-leading beauties.

I hope so. I tell everyone that’s looking for a new car to consider them. I know not everyone wants a “sporty” experience and wants something that flops around like an old pillow but with cars being so good these days people are doing themselves a disservice by not shopping around.

I think it's based on the new Mazda 2

No joke. We were a 2 Mazda family for a while (‘05 Mazda 3s hatch and ‘08 CX-9 AWD GT). I moved on after 90k miles for more power and RWD, but my wife’s CX-9 is still going strong at 170k. Hopefully they release the update soon and it’s good so we can replace hers with that, otherwise we’re looking at the new Honda Pilot or a used MDX.
Can’t wait to see what they do with the new Mazdaspeed 3, and I’m looking forward to getting a drive in the new Miata at some point.

Yeah, they’re going for the same market as the Juke, Renegade, etc. Lots of funky looking little guys all trying to get young, first buyer money.

The CX-5 is the taller 3, but shares no body panels (or interior panels, AFAIK), just as an Escape is a taller Focus, Pilot/MDX a taller Accord, Highlander a taller Camry, etc. Darn near everyone is doing it, but if folks insist on buying a tall vehicle that isn’t a minivan, I’d rather they get a crossover (which, really, is a minivan with four forward-opening doors instead of two and rear sliding doors) than a full body-on-frame SUV (Expedition, Land Cruiser, LR4, Range Rover) that they don’t really have a need for (though some people do).
The pictured vehicle at the top is actually a CX-3, which is the taller Mazda2, which we (the US, maybe all NA?) won’t be getting. The naming is confusing, as the 3-based CX-5 and Mazda5 use 5 in their name, the 6-based CX-9 (prior generation 6, not the current one) uses a 9, and the 2-based CX-3 is smaller than the Mazda3. Plus the RX-8 and MX-5 don’t fit either though they make more sense historically as the MX-5 moniker was around when there was an MX-3 and an RX-7. Maybe the numbers indicate a prestige level, I dunno. Great cars either way.

Yeah I posted my set up on FB. Still haven’t had a chance to go through all of them. I will be making an Oppo Post soon, just been busy at work.

Convinced my gf to look at Mazda a few years ago when her parents were offering to buy her a car as a graduation gift (undergrad and masters degree). She was pretty happy with her Corolla so she looked at those, RAV4, and some Hondas. Then she looked at the Mazda and was smitten. 2012 skyactiv 3. I was so pleased with hers that I barely looked at anything else after comparing all the numbers. Now I have a 2015 3. I’m strongly considering getting a ND Miata in a couple years.
I’m the only one with a brand new Mazda in my neighborhood but there are a lot, mostly 6’s, where I live. I hope they become like Subaru. All the sudden people realize they're good and they do really well so we get the faster cars too. Not sure how skyactiv will mix with turbos.

I agree that buying a truck-frame SUV is stupider than getting one of these crossovers, but why are people so obsessed with ruining a perfectly good car with performance and economy killing ride height and body cladding? A minivan is much more practical and uses a low floor in line with regular cars for huge cabin rooms. These crossovers lift the floor itself and just basically have the same interior room as a car but with shitty handling and MPG.

Pretty much the exact same plan when shopping between the Crosstrek and the Impreza hatchback
